Sabres are happy with tuch. Also doubt they retain as part of the Kessel trade. I'm assuming the owners would be writing that retention check out of their own money, and I can't imagine even asking them to buy a third round pick for 1.75. I can see asking them to buy a late first for 5 million, but for a third, if I was Adam's I wouldn't even bother asking.

So I’ll do it without retention (maybe make the 3rd and turn it into a 4th round pick) and I’ll just keep Martinez or Pacioretty on LTIR until the playoffs like Tampa Bay did.

The difference between Patrick and Tuch presently is much larger than a 3rd. I like Patrick and think he could be great. Until he shows it, he doesn’t hold that kind of value

Buffalo doesn't do that. Patrick isn't promising enough by himself, and the third doesn't give them extra value.
