I don't consider Monahan a cap dump, but he's zero value for Montreal. Toffoli is also not a candidate for retention.
Sorry to say, but I think you're generally at least a 2nd round pick off in your valuations.

I'd consider Toffoli for Zary and a 2nd. A contract can come back, whether that's Monahan or someone else, as long as it doesn't affect the return.

Value he has is pretty accurate, you're asking a team to hold 2 mil for 2 1/2 seasons while also taking what's essentially a cap dump for 1 1/2 years.

No... no it's not. Pelletier is a professional rookie and sits 2nd in the AHL in points with over a point per game, his game took a massive jump from last season to this one, Poirrier is essentially a second shot at Oliver Kylington, slid in the draft due to a poor defensive game but the ceiling is way higher than a lot of prospects.
An underperforming 27 year old C isn't a cap dump, he'd be 4th in points on the Habs all while playing on the 4th line in Calgary, he has 1 less goal and the same amount of assists as Toffoli while playing with significantly worse line mates given Toffoli has missed a few games. Monahan and Toffoli have very very similar extended stats as well.. If your argument is that Monahan is a cap dump so is Toffoli.

Alot to un pack here

1) Toffoli retained for 2 years is worth at least two 2nds plus more, MTL has been horrid this year, no one has looked good. (He scored 28 in 52 last year)

2) Monahan is useless for MTL, he's just extra cap space. They need to get younger not add 6mil players who lost their footing. (Has scored 14 in his last 83)

3) Calgary has a use for Toffoli, which makes him an asset not a cap dump. Especially at 2.2 mil for 2 1/2 years.

Calgary isn't going to throw Pellletier+ into a deal for Toffoli who is nearly 30, underperforming with similar production and underlying numbers as Monahan this year.

There is a lot of trying to force square pegs into round holes with this trade. Why not just do the easy thing?

Habs don't want Monahan so remove him (Even though everyone calling him a cap dump is exaggerating beyond belief) and CGY wants Toffolli for 2.5M.

So just trade picks and prospects for Toffoli @ 2 retained. CGY can easily afford a 2.25M cap hit and Habs only want picks and prospects. Problem solved.
