That trade is horrible for NJ. First off, Severson > Schmidt for a few reasons. Severson is 3 years younger, puts up better numbers, and his next contract will come in only a million higher than Schmidt most likely. Devils would be okay giving Sevo a 6yr deal at 7m. And Vesalainen doesn't add any value; he's a bust. Plus, Severson is one of the leaders on this young devils team. Tbh, any trade for Severson, the devils would probably ask for Ehlers just because how valuable RHD are rn. Not saying WPG would do that, but think that's where NJ would be looking.
Its not horrible if we know we cannot re-sign him.
(Ehlers would be nice though)

This is the off season where the Devils will know if they can re-sign him or not. Are you sure that you want to pay two RD guys 16M?
I think Severson gets something like $6.5m to $7m for 6 years. And that would be worth it. But if we get to July 1st and he asks for Seth Jones money, or says he wants to test UFA market, it would kind of force our hand into trading him.
I think the ideal return would be a younger d-man and a prospect. Schmidt and Vesalainen would both fit in many ways, but not the perfect trade since Schmidt is a little older. Our GM has said, if he adds pieces, he wants guys that are Jack and Nico's age (21 and 23 at next off-season). For the d-man, we would like RHD, but not deal-breaker. Would like defensive d-man who excels at defensive exits (the Achilles heal of our organization). And someone who is NHL ready since most of our kids (Hughes, Mukhamadullin, Bahl, etc) are a year+ away (Walsh probably steps in for Subban when he leaves after this season). For the forward, also right-shot preferred, not required, someone who could slot into 3RW, play defensive minutes if needed. Can play possession style (our 3rd doesn't dump-and-chase). Good size and/or good shot are bonuses.
