Trade Deadline - If the Kings are Buyers

Created by: tryger
Team: 2021-22 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2022
Published: Jan. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't believe the Kings will be buyers, but if they choose to buy at (or before) the deadline they will need to be creative and use their cap space and assets without giving away any picks or prospects.

The Kings give the Knights cap space to facilitate Eichel being activated, in an attempt to bolster their top-6 and defense as a bubble team.

Knights obtain a much cheaper speedy winger (who has scored 30+ goals in the past) and a slightly cheaper defenseman for cap relief and potentially help a division rival possibly knock one of Calgary or Edmonton out of the playoffs.

The Kings get a top-6 two-way player and a physical defenseman familiar with the team in exchange for an oft-injured Athanasiou and Maata without moving any prospects or picks. With Edler and Walker done for the season, there is still $3M in cap to make another move if needed.

I mean, I get it...and it might make some sense, but I don't see Vegas upgrading the Kings lineup, especially considering they'd likely face each other in the playoffs.

Agreed, but I think they are more worried about Calgary or Edmonton in the playoffs. The California teams doing this well might actually keep one of those teams out of a playoff spot, which might be enough for them to pull the trigger.

Does Vegas need cap space to activate Eichel if they just "Kucherov" Pacioretty until the playoffs?

I'm not sure, broken wrist recovery time is 6-8 weeks, they could BS it and keep him out all season, but even then I think they are over by a few million.

I just did an ACGM. Assuming this is their lineup when healthy:

Pacioretty-Eichel-Stone
Marchessault-Karlsson-Smith
Janmark-Stephenson-Dadonov
Carrier-Roy-Kolesar

McNabb-Pietrangelo
Martinez-Theodore
Hague-Whitecloud

If they LTIR Pacioretty for the rest of the season, they could fill his roster spot with Rondbjerg and shuffle the lines appropriately, they'd fit under the cap. They'd have to run with 22 instead of 23 after Eichel is activated, but it would still work.

That would pretty darned close, I tried the same, sent down Bischoff, Leshyshyn, Miromanov, Howden, Amadio, Ferguson, Kolesar, Thompson, and Brooks. Moved Nolan to wing, and scratched Whitecloud and Hutton who I couldn't see getting through waivers and still have -196K. But I think you are right, you can make it work.

It isn't a broken wrist though. The educated guess is some form of ligament or tendon damage with isn't as simple as a break.

Absolutely, but I would be reluctant to think he'll need 5 months of recovery time, unless it was for cap circumvention.
