The Famous 2015 Draft

Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2022
Published: Jan. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We all know the 2015 Bruins draft story, but I want to shine some light on the Leafs 2015 draft.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and this can go for any team. I’m using the Leafs because that’s my team.

Leafs picks:
1st round, 4th overall - Mitch Marner
(rating: 10/10)

2nd round, 34th overall - Travis Dermott (rating: 6/10)
Others available:
-Sebastian Aho - 35th overall (Dubas wanted Aho, Hunter went with Dermott)
-Brandon Carlo - 37th overall
-Mackenzie Blackwood - 42nd overall
-Erik Cernak - 43rd overall
-Roope Hintz - 49th overall

2nd round, 61st overall - Jeremy Bracco
(rating: 0/10)
3rd round, 65th overall - Andrew Nielsen
(rating: 0/10)
Others available:
-Anthony Cirelli - 72nd overall
-Dan Vladar - 75th overall
-Admin Hill - 76th overall

4th round, 95th overall - Jesper Lindgren
(rating: 1/10)
Others available:
-Nicholas Roy - 96th overall
-Alexandre Carrier - 115th overall
-Connor Garland - 123rd overall
-Ethan Bear - 124th overall

5th round, 125th overall - Dmytro Timashov
(rating: 2/10)
Others available:
-Kirill Kaprizov - 135th overall
-Troy Terry - 148th overall
-Adam Gaudette - 148th overall
-John Marino - 154th overall

6th round, 155th overall - Stephen Desrocher
(rating: 0/10)
Others available:
-Vladislav Gavrikov - 159th overall
-Andrew Mangiapane - 166th overall
-Mason Appleton - 168th overall

7th round, 185th overall - Nikita Korostelev
(rating: 0/10)
Others available:
-Steven Lorentz - 186th overall
-Matt Roy - 194th overall
-Joey Daccord - 199th overall

Like I said above, hindsight is 20/20. However, nearly 50% of this draft class has played a game in the NHL.

The Leafs have 3 guys from this who played a game for them in the NHL, and only 2 still remain on the team.
Marner - 381 GP (and counting), 379 PTS
Dermott - 231 GP (and counting), 50 PTS
Timashov - 39 GP, 9 PTS
(no longer with the team)

Not a failure by any means, but it is a little disappointing knowing what we know now.

If you’ve read this far, thank you!
Leave or thoughts below, or don’t. Either way, have a nice night!

Here’s a dumb line-up idea as well!!

It seems so evident now, but it's always hard to evaluate who is going to be great who isn't before the draft. I remember seeing Stephen DesRochers at memorial cup in 2015, he was pretty good. Marner is an elite playmaker and Dermott is a decent player. It's way better then what Habs got in this deep draft. Juulsen, Vejdemo, Bradley, Bourque, Addison. It was business as usual with those bad selections

Draft picks outside of the top 3 rounds have a better chance of never playing in the NHL then they do of playing, with 3rd rounders being pretty much a coin flip. You can do this with pretty much every team, every draft. I know Aho being selected the pick after Dermott is bitter sweet, but he never really exploded until the year after he got drafted.

I know, I know.

I stated in the description that I understand this can be done for basically any team (Montreal had a terrible 2015. Boston’s wasn’t good either) and it’s not only 2015. It happens all the time. Too many to count.

I was just having some fun. Looking at how crazy this draft class really was.

49.8% of the players in this draft have played at least 1 game in the NHL. That’s insane!

The Aho thing stings even more because Dubas wanted him, but wasn’t in charge at the time. Dermott is good and all, but Sebastian Aho is Sebastian Aho. Pretty self explanatory tears of joy

The Leafs downfall for years has been poor drafting......Quinn hated young players and as a GM traded young guys and picks, Burke, was brutal in drafting (when he kept the picks) and Mark Hunter the so called whiz in knowing draft eligible players was very poor in drafting, And I left out John Ferguson and Dave Nonis,,,,,I'm sure their drafting was poor also.

Then again, we wouldn't have cap space to keep them all
