Sharks refresh

Created by: DenisPotvin
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2022
Published: Jan. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hertl is leaving, the Sharks would be wasting Meier's prime years, Barabanov/Reimer/Nieto has no place on a rebuilding team, and Burns is only getting older. Fundamentally they need to make their team worse so that they can actually rebuild. With these trades, they get a bunch of players who will be in or near their prime when the team is actually ready to compete. They can continue to trade pieces like Hill, Compher, and Bonino at future trade deadlines for more assets.

Florida pays the admittedly high price for the highest ES scorer in the league. They seem to have really good center depth but I don't think they have a lot of natural right-wingers...Meier would instantly be the best one on their team.

The Colorado trade I'm sure is controversial. In my mind, this is Colorado trading some really good futures (Newhook, 1st-rounder), a decent player who's probably a bit too expensive (Compher), and a very good player who may not be a great fit (he's had two consecutive poor playoffs and Colorado is deep on the left-defense) for short-term help. This is an "I'll pay you two hamburgers tomorrow for a hamburger today" deal. Hertl and Barabanov would almost assuredly just be rentals for them, but would of course make their team much stronger for this season. Reimer would be a very solid goaltending option (quite cheaply) for two years. Burns is still a top defenseman and is now fairly cheap; at least for 2 playoff runs he should be great.

Florida isn't doing this! Are you kidding? Lundell is already too damn good, and Florida's 3c on cheap contract

Florida isn't doing that. Their strength is their depth on the wing. Plus, the Panthers lead the league even strength GF, Meier doesn't cater to the Panthers' needs

Avs don’t consider that even for a second, that’s just bad business for them and an easy massive decline

You know the COL trade is bad for COL really bad, like ridiculous bad. Older, more expensive and worse is never a way to go in a trade.

It's also just absurdly complex. When was the last time there were 9 players involved in a two-team trade? The EK trade to San Jose and Kessel to Pittsburgh trades are the only ones that come even close, and it's still off.

@DenisPotvin The only attractive return for the Avs there is Hertl, and Burns is untradeable, even with retention.
