Taking on cap etc

Created by: Tintin
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2022
Published: Jan. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This last loss against NYI felt like any hope in making the playoffs went.
Taking some cap, trading Zacha and Severson.
Feel free to roast my trades til' hearts content.

Lines below are for 22-23 season, without any other external acquisitions made in FA or trade.

Oh, Fiala extended 7-8yrs at roughly 6.5m.
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Rask, Victor
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
I don't know if Minny would be interested in dumping Rask's cap. My thinking is that this would give Minny enough room to pursue a high end rental like Hertl at TDL.
MIN
  1. 2022 5th round pick (CBJ)
2.
NJD
  1. DeBrusk, Jake
Additional Details:
DB's value is lowered by:
- 4.85m QO (I think)
- lacking production
- requested trade
BOS
  1. Boqvist, Jesper
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Bo needs a change of scenery but has room to grow, 3C upside and low cap hit. Feel like this is enough for DB.
3.
NJD
  1. Fiala, Kevin
Additional Details:
This is taking advantage of the fact that the recaptures on Parise and Suter may make Wild unable to negotiate a contract with Fiala. Again, this lowers Guerin's leverage. Though this offer might get beat by some other team.
MIN
  1. Zacha, Pavel
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Trade done in 2022 off season. Pick shouldn't be no later than #40 overall.
4.
NJD
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
PIT could be a proxy for any team looking to trade for PK at TDL.
PIT
  1. Subban, P.K. ($4,500,000 retained)
5.
NJD
  1. Koskinen, Mikko
  2. Turris, Kyle
  3. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Shedding cap in order to target rentals and other acquisitions at TDL. Also, Devils might be the only team in which Koskinen fills a need as Bernier's out and Blackwood may or may not be playing hurt atm.
6.
NJD
  1. Källgren, Erik
  2. Niemelä, Topi [Reserve List]
  3. Ritchie, Nick
  4. 2022 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Its gotta be one of Niemelä, Knies or Amirov. If its any of the later two Toronto would need to add another piece, like a 2nd.
Ritchie for cap purposes, he's of no value to the Devils.
TOR
  1. Severson, Damon ($2,083,333 retained)

No, Minnesota isn't paying anything to dump Rask. He cost 2 min to the cap and is a free agent after year end. He's also a useful depth piece with injuries, and covid.

You are just assuming on fiala, and you are wrong. Minnesota isn't trading fiala for a worse more expensive player and 2nd round pick because according to you, Minnesota has no leverage with Parise and suter's cap hold. Fiala will only be traded for a top c, or 1st round pick with top prospect.

If you are taking on cap from the Leafs and Holl has no value to you anyway, I'd stick you with Ritchie rather than Holl. Same kind of cap hit and term, you can eat it.

Haha Oilers aren’t wasting two good picks go move UFAs. Oilers aren’t going to be big game rental hunting, so the additional cap space for this deadline makes zero sense.

I think you are severely overestimating the cost of dumping UFAs. Same goes for the Rask deal

You even said that Devils could use a goalie. So again, why are we paying through the nose to move him?

Good lord no. Not trading Niemela who is our best defense prospect by miles and Kallgren who has been very good with a very bad Marlies team

Thats the kind of cost a true top 4 right handed dman has with term, especially when making the cap work for a cap strapped team.

I just don't see how Wild will be able to keep Fiala through the summer, or keep Fiala without moving another big name like Dumba. Zuccarello won't be easy to trade either.
Zacha isn't more expensive btw, should be able to extend him in the summer for max 4m, with more yrs of team control than Fiala.
But like I said, some other team may beat this offer though.

As suggested above......Leafs keep their top 7 Dmen, 1.5 years of Severson isn't worth a very good propsect, a good prospect and and a first.

If Minnesota trade fiala, it will be in summer for top c, or 1st with too prospect. Minnesota aren't trading fiala for a lesser player they don't need, when they are stacked @ Winger

First, I understand why Minnesota pays us to take Rask, but why does Arizona give up a late pick for him? Couldn’t MIN just deal directly with ARI?

Second, for Debrusk, why are giving up positive value for him? I don’t think he is a negative player, but the return, in my view, should be a late pick or just a player.

I love Fiala and have tried him many times here before. The response I get from MIN fans has varied. Hard to read what they want, but I think this trade would be in ballpark value-wise.

Severson deal - it would have to be Niemela, 1st+ or similar value. Have seen so many leafs fans saying it should be Holl, a B-prospect and mid-pick. They are all getting it from a Hockey Writers article that said that should be the price. So weird. I hope we keep Sevs and extend him long term.

I really hope we are not going through another cycle as sellers. It’s gonna start hurting the development of our existing young core.

They challenge will be finding a top center, which few teams are selling. And if they are, they are looking for futures or younger, cheaper in return.

If Guerin can get a Turcotte, Lundell or similar for Fiala, great. But I don’t think those are options, are they?

No which is why Minnesota will probably end up trading him for a 1st and top prospect or keep him! But if fiala is trying to get paid like 8 mil like last off-season, or doesn't change his game, then he's getting traded

This would hurt his trade value, no?

I am not arguing for a Zacha deal, but the pool of centers that would be available for Fiala would be unlikely to produce a 1C.

It will likely be an Arvidsson or Buchnevich like return.

The Devils are probably one of the teams more likely to come calling. We are deep at center, have cap space, have a need on wing, and Hischier has had chemistry with Fiala. The list of centers we'd move would probably be limited (Hughes, Nico, Mercer and probably Sharangovich would not be options). That leaves Zacha, Boqvist or AHLers as part of package.

Fiala can get more than both players! Minnesota isn't in a situation where they just want to rid of players. Fiala is better than both. Minnesota can easily get a 1st and top prospect for fiala. Winger isn't a need as we are stacked there

On Arizona, it's supposed to be a proxy for any team interested in Rask. Just forgot to write it.
Edit: had another think and realized I was under the assumption that Rask is retained by NJD, which isn't possible due to PK and Sevs. so yeah, you're right. my bad

DeBrusk - I just have a hard time seeing Sweeney trading him for smthn like a 6th. May just be that he isn't qualified at all and thus made a UFA. Would love for Fitz to pursue him in that case.

On being sellers:
PK - I don't see the problem in selling him, UFA no 4 / 5 defender. The 2nd he's gonna fetch is worth more than the WAR or GAR (or insert other metric) that he'd provide between February - April.

Cap Space - I just think all available cap space Devils can spare between now and end of 22-23 should be put to use, provided that owners can stomach the cash outlay.

Severson - Part is cus its just kinda trendy atm as you've noticed. And while I think its unlikely Sevs goes this season, he along with Graves are the most valuable assets to sell which aren't under team control longer than 22-23. The return in futures for him could extend the post 2023 contention window by many years, which is why i find the idea of trading him rather palpable. Even though that'd make the 22-23 rather difficult on defence.

Just saying, you could play Zacha at C (he's done that at NJD before), if you have good wingers to surround him with.

I think his return will be similar to Buchnevich. Maybe a bit more if they move him at deadline.
Teams just don't pay for wingers these days. Centers and RHD, yes. Wingers, no.

He won't be getting either of those
Centers are more valuable than wingers. So top center is out of the picture unless the Wild add
He could maybe get a prospect + 1st but that depends on your definition of "top prospect". He's not returning a 1st + Holtz, Perfetti, etc

That is in the ballpark of Fiala's value. Not an ideal return for MN, but I agree they are going to hung out to dry with a Fiala offseason trade.
