Massive overpayment for Liane. Sharks aren’t trying the Goose again.

I don't think the Islanders do that Laine trade. As for the Sharks, I like Nyquist a lot and I wouldn't mind getting him back. Thing is, his cap hit is significantly higher than when he first played with the Sharks and we are in the process of a silent rebuild (even if DW never admits it to the public). Would CBJ mind retaining $1.25M if we add Labanc to this trade in lieu of the 3rd round pick?

Laine can demand arbitration and force a two-year contract which allows him to walk in 2024. Meanwhile, he hasn't enjoyed the same success in Columbus as he did in Winnipeg, so his value has decreased, not increased, since then. NY has an easy decline.

I could be wrong but if im not mistaken if one entity files for arbitration (obviously assuming they dont reach an agreement beforehand) the other entity gets to pick between a 1 or 2 year deal. Therefore if laine filed for arbitration the isles could make it a 1 year deal and still have rfa rights at the end of the year.

I was under the impression that once a party filed for arbitration, the next contract was the last, but I could be wrong, too. In any event, the point is that the Isles could only have him under contract for two years, as if an arbitration occurs in the last year of free agency, the contract can only be for one year.

My point was only that if they did trade for him and he didnt want to sign long term theyd still have rfa rights to trade so they could get value back.

This season is Laine's 6th year in the league. I'm fairly sure he can just sign his $7.5m QO next summer and go UFA the following summer since he would then have 7 years of service. He doesn't need to worry about any arbitration scenarios.
