I used to believe that Brayden Point was going to become the next Patrice Bergeron perennial selke type centre. I no longer think this because he doesn't kill penalties.

Barkov has become that kinda all situation guy. Couturier is up there too. Stone is up there as well.

Am I missing anyone who should be in the selke conversation this season?

I understand he's infinitely better defensively but does he have a shot since he doesn't kill penalties?

Per the GM Game scoring system, the best defensive player is Lehkonen, then Matthews and Suzuki tied with Bonino at 4 and RoR at 5

I don't think they should use penalty kill as a factor for the Selke. Teams don't always want to use their best players to kill penalities.

But it's an award for the best defensive player. Bergeron, Datsyuk, O'Reilly, Stone etc all kill/killer penalties.

Crosby is a fantastic defensive centre

Agreed. But does he get a selke nomination with an average 17seconds of SHTOI?

The PK is a factor but not a major one.

I don’t think the PK is a major factor in the voting. They’re looking at even strength play.

You say that. But looking at last year the top 5 in selke voting all killed penalties consistently.
Barkov 1:25
Bergeron 1:48
Stone 1:20
Ek 1:39
O'Reilly 2:02
I'm not saying you have to be the go to pk guy on the team but you gotta do it a bit. It's the most defensive situation you can be in short of defending a 1 goal lead in the final minute. Which is something else all these guys above do.

Bergeron is the best defensive forward since Gainey

Idk, the person responsible for the scoring has an awards sections and the Selke is the forward with the most defensive game points, the person for scoring changed over the offseason though so we didn’t have that last year

Some teams don’t put their best forwards on PK

Yes. But the teams with legit defensive superstars don't hesitate to put them out there and they're the guys who should be in contention for the Selke.

They don't have to be the go to PK guy. But if you're not trusted on the PK you shouldn't be in the selke talk. The selke finalists always kill penalties and that shouldnt change.

His numbers are on par with Barkov when he won it last year

Only problem rn is he does not kill penalties but seeing his play he could and man would Matthews-Marner be even more terrifying

Who knows maybe they look past that and give it to him for name sake.

The way I see it is that penalty-kill situations are very high-leverage, and that teams will put out their best defensive players, regardless of how good they are offensively. Not putting someone on the PK is a statement by the coach saying "we're more likely to win the game if this player isn't on the ice when we need the best defense". I absolutely think that not playing PK should disqualify a player from Selke consideration.

Sure. Guys like Ovechkin, Kaprizov, Jack Hughes, and Kucherov don't kill penalties and that's just fine, because their coach believes that the team is more likely to win with them on the bench. A coach keeping his best defensive forward on the bench when he is needed most is ludicrous

I'm not going to suggest that Buchnevich should be among the top Selke candidates this season... but at this rate, he's heading toward that general area. The guy has been outstanding defensively.

I also think folks are sleeping on Backlund and Danault this season. They've been sneaky great defensively.

Oh... and Stone has been rather pedestrian defensively this season. Not anywhere near his usual level.

Whoa, you had me ready to like until that last phrase. It would be very hard to convince me that a non-PK-ing mofo should win the Selke. Killing pens at a top level seems like an obvious requirement to me.

If it wasnt for Keefe being fearful of him suffering an injury on the PK

Matthews would be a strong candidate.

The guy is putting up defensive numbers similar to when Barkov won the Selke

Only issue he doesnt PK so unless a miracle happens dont see him winning it lul

Cause honestly if Nylander is getting PK time why not Matthews.

When you say defensive numbers. Which numbers are you looking at and where do you get them?
I'm curious how Huberdeau's look and I'm not sure where to start.
