Jeff Marek on the Leafs

Created by: bald_and_bankrupt
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 17, 2022
Published: Jan. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I was listening to Marek's podcast and thinks the Leafs won't be making any trade deadline moves (the current Leafs will be the team heading into the playoffs). He believes the Leafs want to grow as a team and got all the help they needed from last season

Cap kills them with any chance to make a move

That would be a huge mistake

I would be worried considering a lot of eastern teams are planning to add at the deadline (Bruins, Lightning, and Panthers)

If the Leafs get Tampa or Florida, I don't see the Leafs having much of a chance. They couldn't figure out Price and the Habs last season, how will they beat Vasy and the physical Lightning?

I really don't so any TDL moves that would be worth the cost to the Leafs. Leafs don't the cap or prospects that make trades viable even if there is a difference maker to be had.

We hear all these moves that the Panthers, Lighting, and Bruins want to make. What if the Leafs face one of those teams that acquire a guy like Hertl on top of their stacked team?

We don’t have the cap space to add a impact player might aswell stand pat and hope for the best in the playoffs

Well the Leafs had the so "physicality" of Thornton, Foligno and Bogosian last year and where did it get them? Actually the Bruins are coming on, and with their games in hand....it's actually very close among the top four in The Atlantic. Have a plugging physical winger or physical but just OK Dman isn't going to make any difference. Leafs will win or lose with what they have.

This actually makes sense. There are options with the Mariles for any offensive help (Steeves, Ho-Sang, Seney, Robertson if he gets healthy) but I would still like a defensive depth D.

I mean realistically what can they actually get with only 3 picks this year. They need retention to acquire anyone of significant.
They would need to ship out salary and I don’t see that happening. A Holl, Dermott, Ritchie trade is not going to move the needle.

I am totally fine with this approach.

Well that team would be better wouldn't it. But if the Leafs acquired Hertl and let's say price of Niemela, Amirov and first...do the Leafs still make to the Conference Finals? Then the Leafs lose...admitting in the future, two cost controlled NHLers. Should the Leafs be going that road again? Hasn't worked for years...these TDL additions.

Mikheyev may end up being the "deadline add".

Or Ho-Sang/Robertson (if healthy)

Possibly if injuries pop up.

Difference is Mikheyev had to steal a spot from Ritchie. Those 2 have a much tougher task taking a job if everyone is healthy.

That's a rosy picture from Marek. With Dubas' job on the line though this season, you can bet he's going to pay big to try and keep it.

Absolutely, I just agree with the post, I don’t see them adding any big rental acquisition. Help will come internally

I don't think the Leafs could afford to lose another first round pick with only two picks left in this season's draft

But who do the Leafs have internally that will give the Leafs a deep playoff run?

Marek be incorrect with this. Besides listening to reports by Friedman, Serevalli, among others Leafs are apparently looking at making a potential trade before the deadline. As we know from history Dubas likes to do that (i.e. Muzzin and Campbell trades)

Thanks to Ritchie getting Waived Leafs at the deadline will have cap space. Add to the fact Dermott may also be moved Leafs will have some room to do some business

Then we add the fact 3-way trades are a thing

Klingberg cap hit in a 3-way trade 1.0625mill
Giordano 1.6874mill

There are also cheap good depth pieces

Brassard 875k
Braun 900k (50% retained)

Cause yes the team is doing well but a series against Florida who seems to have rebounded recently or a full health Tampa is not gonna be easy and as we have seen this team still needs some help

The only problem is that the Leafs have no assets (picks or prospects) to trade for rentals or players with terms

They have their 1st and 2nd this year, All their 2023 picks besides the 7th, Robertson, Amirov, Knies, Niemela, etc.

So the no assets is completely wrong lul

They can easily trade for someone come the deadline.

Niemela and Knies should be untouchables unless you're trading for Chychrun
