Byron nor his contract are that bad that we need to trade Poehling with him lol. It’s one year left at like 3.5M and Byron can still play. Just ride it out!
Terrible proposal ….plus you left cap space open so why did you feel the need to get rid of Byron anyways?????

Honestly I wouldn’t even want Ottawa to take the Byron trade. Byron may still be serviceable but there’s no reason for Ottawa to pick up what’s left of the contract. Poehling isn’t exactly a great incentive to take the contract off your hands either. He’s struggled for 3 straight years… hasn’t really done much since that hat trick and so winner in his first game.

I agree that Montreal should ride it out but if they did need to get rid of the contract then it would take a sweetener that’s a little sweeter than Poehling haha

I disagree. Byron first of all can still play. He’s not a total cap dump. He has some value for sure. He was very good for us in the playoffs. Is he worth 3.5M? No probably not, maybe overpaid by 1-1.5M or so. Poehling has actually shown some really nice progress this year. He will be full time player next year and to be honest I don’t think he’s ever going back down to the AHL. Any team doesn’t need to “take byrons contract off of our hands” like it’s really not that bad first of all. I’d rather hold on to him, hope he shows he can still play like he did last year, trade him at next years deadline for 50% retained and actually get something for him.

I think poehling can become something like formenton. Maybe not as good but same type of player, middle of the lineup. 40 point guy when he is established in the nhl.

Sorry, to be clear, I'm not saying that Byron can't play. Just that most teams wouldnt want to pick him up with the money that he's owed. A 4th line player scoring at a pace of less than 10 goals and 30 points for the season is okay but just not at his price tag. If he was signed for 1m he'd have a bunch of suitors but with an extra year left at 3.4m I dont think anyone's lining up to acquire his services. Even at 50% retained, you're still asking a team to pay 1.7m against the cap for a player that likely isnt a difference maker. Someone might be willing but realistically would they pay you? I also don't think Ottawa would want him potentially taking a roster spot in the bottom 6 from a prospect trying to break into the league.

And for Poehling, being 40 point middle 6 guy is probably his ceiling but he's not close to that yet. Specifically for Ottawa they'd have to really believe in him because I'm not sure he'd have too much of an opportunity next year in the NHL. The Sens have 9 forwards locked in for next year. Aside from those 9 does he play ahead of Greig, Sokolov or even Gambrell and Gaudette? If they decide to bring Sanford, Paul or Tierney back does he slide in ahead of them? That's also without mentioning the fact that the team will likely bring in UFA forwards and he definitely wouldnt play ahead of Kuzmenko or GIroux if Ottawa managed to land them somehow. My point is that Montreal has already invested so much in Poehling that it makes sense to see it through with him but for another team looking at him objectively, he likely doesnt carry the same value that he does to the Habs and it may not be worth the trouble of putting him ahead of other prospect/players.

I’m not even making the case specifically for Ottawa. Just from montreal1 POV, it’s make no sense to trade Byron and have to include poehlkng. Especially since we will suck next year….

Edmonton declines. In their teams past 82 games Barrie has outscored Drouin by a lot:

Barrie: 81,11-51-62
Drouin: 63, 7-26-33

And Drouin makes $1M more than Barrie. This isn't close.

To be fair, put me on a powerplay with Connor and Leon and I’ll get 30 points just by osmosis. I get your point and I agree but let’s not exaggerate either….

It doesn't work that way. Firstly you have to be good enough to get on that powerplay, secondly Barrie also outscored Drouin at 5v5 too.

Barrie: 81, 5-24-29
Drouin: 63, 7-16-23

And I haven't even mentioned that Barrie is a defenseman while Drouin is a winger. For reference Petry has 15 5v5 points in Montreal's last 82 games, while Chiarot and Romanov have 9 each.

Agreed, Montreal needs at the very least to retool so Byron's cap hit is not a problem anymore. Plus he's a good guy/vet

Plus, Poehling has un-busted. Keep him. Evans and Poehling as bottom-6 centers could be decent
