deadline with depth shown

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2022
Published: Jan. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Campbell Extends 5 x 5 before the Leafs make the Mrazek for Fleury trade.

Chara for defensive depth, size, experience.

JT Miller will cost ALOT half retained for this year and next. He would be a great option for left wing or a centre spot if one of our centres go down to injury. Bunting is on the 4th line here but the lines would change a lot.

I really like this team for this year and next.

1st, and 2 of the Leafs 3 best prospects? Robertson and Niemela are both legit prospects.

definitely. that package to vancouver hurts but 2 years of adding miller at that cap hit with our core would be HUGE for a potential cup. This is an all in type of deal.

Chicago declines, there are a few teams that might be interested in bringing Fleury in that wouldn't ask Chicago to take a cap dump and would likely move a 1st rounder in a bidding war.

Mrazek is a good goalie and is definitely worth his cap hit. He just has had injury issues. The Leafs only trade him for cap flexibility next year to resign Campbell. He could be a good Goalie for Chicago for the next 2 years. 2nd and a mediocre prospect + Mrazek is definitely worth it. But if you guys can get a 1st, then that would be a good option also.

Fleury half retained was my number one choice this past off season. I thought it made too much sense. But here we are....

Mrazek's contract just isn't appealing, there are so many options for meddling goaltenders than him that wouldn't cost that much. His injury history has also hindered his play and I don't think Chicago is looking to do any team a favor/take a chance on a player like that. There's really nothing stopping Chicago from offering Campbell $6M+ a year next season aside from themselves.

Definitely. Ritchie has not lived up to 2.5m either. And his salary is actually 3.3m next year. So between Miller being Miller, the retention and then taking Ritchie as salary back, that's why the Leafs make such a big package. 1st (probably a weak first), Robertson or Amirov (both a level forward prospects), Niemela (a level defensive prospect). Those are some nice pieces. I am sure other teams would make big offers also. Like if Minni decides to part from Rossi or Boldy things could get interesting there.

What's stopping Chicago from offering Campbell $6M+ is Seth Jone's extension kicking in, Dach needing a new contract, and paying Toews and Kane a combined $21M

Also, Campbell isn't guarenteed to make it to the UFA Market. In this trade scenario, the Leafs lock him up now, and then make the trade for Fleury.

Dach's next deal will barely be over $2M at the current clip he's on. The hawks could certainly afford Campbell. Both Toews and Kane have a year left on their deals and I'd expect both of them to take pay cuts (Also thinking it's possible Toews retires), so there's really no long term cap hits asides from Jones' extension.

Again, there's no reason for Chicago to help TOR out with this trade. Toronto would have to add significantly to make it work.

I think this is a good deal for Chicago also. But if they can get better, they should go for it. I see this as a Win Win trade. And what do you mean by "Significantly"? How much are you expecting to get for him?

Retention on a starting goalie and a cap dump (with 2 additional years) starts with a 1st round pick, and likely a 3rd or B prospect. I don't think it makes sense for Chicago to trade him to TOR when they could move him to Pittsburgh or Edmonton and get a better result.

Okay, basically my package but a 1st instead of a 2nd. I offered a b prospect and a 2nd. Thanks!

It's a legit offer, but the picks will be late 1st and 2nds. I think the prospects are B+. Vancouver can probably get a better level of prospect

As a Leafs fan and the person who made this post... I agree with this statement.... hahahaha - Swap SDA for a B prospect if Chicago doesn't view him as such.

We will have the capacity to have 7-8m in our goalie quite comfortably. Depending on what happens with our RFA's will determine if we have more or less flexibility but I'm expecting us to have some room to play with.

Neither Kane nor Toews can take pay cuts until the summer of 2023 and Campbell is eligible to become a free agent this summer

They can still fit him into the team quite easily. And they'll have more room to add in 2023 as well.
