Keeping Hertl

Created by: glarson17
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2022
Published: Jan. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Say the cap doesn’t rise the $1 mil with all the stoppages. Sharks decide to wait a year to buy out Vlasic to get a more favorable buyout. This is a more conservative option for the sharks going into next year.

This is under the assumption that the NHLPA doesn't win anything on behalf of Kane and there are zero cap implications.

WTF is that Knyzhov trade, no, absolutely no reason to trade him.

Sure, there very well could be a settlement reached for a cap hit similar to Richards had. There’s a sharks podcast that talks about that and how Kane would make more money in a settlement than a buyout at the end of the year, so that could be a very likely possibility.

The guy isn’t that good, he’s had one good season and likely won’t play at all this year. Zero guarantee he returns to form and the sharks have other options that have been performing just as well.

What’s the motivation for Hertl to stay though? Sure, you’re overpaying in AAV but not in term. And California is so high tax he would probably be better off taking 7.5 elsewhere. Not like the sharks are going to be any good over the duration of that deal.

why won’t they be that good? our scouting staff have been fantastic the last 2 drafts, we have a top 10 prospect pool and we are going to see 1-2 rookies push their way into the lineup each of the next 3-4 years, if not more. and that’s without considering any of the prospects from the next few drafts, your under estimating the sharks here

I feel like the lineup here could compete next season, maybe need a better goaltending tandem. Hertl has shown this season to be a beast and the sharks will greatly miss him not being on this team. If they trade him for not a great package it will be even worse for them as an organization.

play smart with the cap add where needed and shed some salary here and there, few shrewd trades combined with at least a few rookies that flourish from Coe Eklund Gushin Robins Bordeleau Merkley and possibly Hatakka and or Kinazev, with Raska weatherby and i’m sure 1-2 others will blossom like a Reedy or a Laroque then add 2022 and 2023 draft and by 24 or 25 season we should be in cup contention and looking strong as long as burns doesn’t regress badly and Karlson and couture stay at a high level.
Hill has looked much better so he still might be a solid future option, Reimer has been great but 2-3 years from now he should be wrapping up his career

This time likely isn’t going anywhere with such a crazy amount of money tied up in Karlsson, Vlasic, burns, and couture.

No. People don’t undervalue him in trades. People massively overvalue him in trades, yourself included. He is a good player, but he’s not elite.

Never finished telling me why he’s worth more than Stone. I’m still curious.

The sharks are known to be conservative with their prospects so I see most of those guys having a year in the ahl to you know “work on the details”. Reimers value will never be higher than now with another year on his deal. I think they could get a 2nd for him and that’s good for being a free agent signing. Can use that 2nd to get another goaltender that’s younger with promise or just for the draft

Guy is an elite two way center that plays in all situations and is on pace for over 40 goals this year. But ya he isn’t “elite” smh.

Sheeesh. This post is just riddled with weird stuff. Start with saying “we,” 25 times in reference for a team you are not a part of.
Then the assertions: The scouting staff has been fantastic the last two years? Oh have they? Do you base this on the 9 games that Eklund played before scooting on back home, or the 3 games Adam raksa played?
We are going to see 1-2 rookies push their way into the lineup each of the next four years? Are we now? And what else has your crystal ball told you? All jazzed up because Bordeleau is 6th on michigan in scoring? Or is it kniasev absolutely tearing up the AHL that’s doing it for you?
Ohhh wait it’s the drafts that haven’t happened yet….even though those guys usually take five years to make any sort of impact. Gotcha.

I’m not sure why sharks fans are even thinking about making any trades, sounds like you’re all set.

Or. This team has a hair under half their space eaten up by Vlasic, Burns, Couture, and Karlsson for the foreseeable future. Not good.

He’s having a good year. No questions there. But he’s only scored 30 once. Only hit 50 points once. He’ll probably do both of those again in his contract year, but do you think that means teams are just going to ignore the rest of his career? The one in which the only award vote he’s ever gotten was a third place Calder vote. That one. That would be weird.

But ya, why is he worth more than stone? I’m still all sorts of curious about that.

Get the over the stone argument you child. There are plenty of other bad trades that can be used to go in favor of the sharks.

Yeah you know a .87 ppg face over the last 4 season including this year is just average, he isn’t elite. Only averages to 71 points in an 82 game average.

I just thought it was funny taht you pulled some move where you said there was no evidence, and then when presented with the evidence you just slinked away.

Anyhow, yes. Last four years, he’s 55th in points per game. Congrats. 55th isn’t elite. Is teravainen elite? How about Perron? Wheeler? O’Reilly? There must be a lot of elite players in this league.

we because i’m a die hard Sharks fan and season ticket holder!
1-2 because of scouting projections
and the drafts have been fantastic based on outside scouting projections and what nhl scouts have said combined with how i am seeing things progress,
yes we have a lot ties up in older players but with a youth movement starting this year (we lead the league in rookie points scored rookie games played and players making their first career starts helps offset the big salaries.
and i said my thoughts don’t even include the 22 or 23 drafts as they haven’t happened yet.
and no we are a fringe playoff team that needs a better 3C 2 top 6 wingers and maybe a top 4 D but we’re moving in the right direction finally.

there is more to being an Elite player than points.
Vlasic was Elite for years as a shut down D man.
Danault is an Elite defensive center man who wins games on play not points.
Draisaitle and McDavid are destroying the league and their team sits behind the sharks right now. Hertl may not be considered Elite by most, but he is a Legit top line center and a star in this league. and how many guys are projecting 40 goals this year?

As i said he’s having a good season. Above the normal for him. Good year last year too. Almost a point a game. Not quite, but almost. Now do i think hes randomly become something else at 28? No, and i also don’t think he’s going to shoot 17.4% forever either. He’s tied for 27th in goals per game. Quite good. I don’t think Sam Bennett or mangiapane are elite either btw.

You’re right, that there is certainly more to the game than points, but lets not make him out to be some sort of defensive wizard here. The guys never gotten so much as a 5th place vote for the selke. Never been on anyone’s ballot.

I disagree. I think the sharks are moving in the wrong direction, and have one of the least enviable positions in the league. If all these draft picks you’ve anointed as amazing pan out, the sharks will have a difficult time paying any of them because of the long term commitment to older, declining players.

fair enough, but no shark ever gets votes unless they are putting up insane stats. west coast bias
I feel Hertl is Elite, but at the lower end of the Elite title
i also feel Stone is Elite.
but to your comments
Hertl shooting percentage the last 4 years 19.9, 13.7, 17.4 so him maintaining 17% shooting percentage seems legit.
PPG average last 4 years .87 or about 72 points per 82 games (not Elite I agree but really good)
his defensive metrics are above average. not Danault good but closer than i think you realize.

the question is why do you hate Hertl so much and love argue with sharks fans so much?

no because as these kids ELC start to expire so do the big sharks deals, for instance Coe Eklund when Burns deal is up and potentially Bordeleau when Vlasic deal is up and so on.
it’s crazy but it’s not as bad as people think.

He does seem to disappear when legit stats come up to counter his feelings.

plus what’s wrong with saying “we” as a teams fan?
