I think any trade with Gallagher would need to start at $1.5-2m retention.

I think so too, but I don’t think the habs would be willing to retain any salary on him for 6 years.

Fine, let me fix his statement.

It's not just a fan thing. Brendan's contract makes absolutely zero sense from LA's side. They will have big raises to give to players in 2 and 3 years. And on top of that Gallagher is going to be 30. That doesn't make sense to add to a team just coming out of a rebuild.

Kings say no, unless you guys want to retain 50%. Then we might send you the 2nd round pick, minus Helge Grans.

There are teams that want Gallagher. That's not the issue. Its what you expect to get back for him that is the problem. Not even so much the type of picks and/or prospects. Its the salary\cap hit change.

Habs can get some nice pieces for Gallagher but until almost equal salary is coming back to the Habs, a trade is unlikely. Only a few teams have the actual cap space to just take on 6M and most of those teams aren't playoff teams so they probably wouldn't be interested in trying to get better right now by adding Gally anyway.

Since retaining on such a long contract and teams only having limited retention spots per year, its not a matter of retaining either. Its literally another player coming back that will offset Gallagher's salary so they can fit him in under the cap and are not taking on so much extra salary either. Keep in mind "salary" also means how much future salary is owed. Gally is signed for a long time so the player coming back has to have some term on his contract also. Can't just be a 1 year deal that ends this year or next.

If you can figure out the "right" contract coming back to MTL that makes sense for both teams, you'll figure out a trade idea that could work.

A theory founded in what though? Like I've seen this posted several times and the only logic I hear is that Bergevin really likes Gallagher? Bergevin is (1) not in charge of the Kings and (2) doesn't tend to make bad trades. If he were to help Blake trade for him, he'd illustrate that in every metric Gally is on the decline for the season and on-track to score as many goals as Kings 4th liners, additionally his no trade clause allows him to dictate which team he would prefer even further lowering his value. Unless 40%+ is retained on Gallagher, I don't see why the Kings couldn't use that cap space to acquire a better player on a better contract without losing assets in the free agency next year.

Yeah I agree! What player would you think make sense for the kings in free agency? Rust, Gaudreau, Malkin?

Let's use the actual, concrete numbers.

To save people the effort of looking up his contract terms, here's what Gallagher is owed on the last five years of his deal:
2022-2023: $6.5 million
2023-2024: $8 million (!)
2024-2025: $9 million (!!), at the end of which he turns 33
2025-2026: $6.5 million, for a 34-year-old winger who already has injury concerns
2026-2027: $4 million

Los Angeles isn't so awash in cash that these figures are acceptable in the least, as @F50marco has intimated above. (In contrast, we're paying Anze Kopitar $7 million for each of the last two years on his contract.) A cost-conscious team like Los Angeles isn't going to take Gallagher on unless it's with at least 40% retention, or Drew Doughty somehow gets an uncontrollable urge to play for the Canadiens.

My friend @PuckLuck_77 has his trade value right.

No need to try trading Gallagher. Let teams know he's available and take an offer if it makes sense.
Otherwise simply keep him. He fits into either a contender or a rebuild, and he can play up or down the lineup. His contract really doesn't matter much.

This is the truth right here. Habs will still need to reach the cap floor for coming years so we can't simply get rid of everyone. Gally isn't good enough to just will his team into the playoffs so he wouldn't hurt our rebuild chances either. They'll need some god vets to keep the kids in line and not build bad habits.

Habs have plenty of other players to trade to try and get picks and prospects. No need to purge literally everyone. Gally makes more sense to keep than trade.

In our pipedream someone like Forsberg or Gadreau. More likey someone like Riley Smith or Rickard Rakell, I believe the Kings have the prospects to have one shake out as a top-6, they just need time to develop. So they need a 2-3 year stop gap who can score 20, ideally they have a defensive game.
