Effective Offseason

Created by: Canucks33
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 17, 2022
Published: Jan. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Create a rock solid top-9 that will stay together long term. Last thing that could be looked at up front is a right handed center who can play defensive minutes and PK.

Defense is essentially the same, which isn't ideal. However after this year Hamonic can be upgraded and Barron could step in. Rathbone being up full time helps for this year and gives Boudreau more puck movers. LD is pretty much set, RD has help on the way.

Given the parity in the Pacific and a full year under Boudreau, I expect this team to be right in the mix for the Playoffs.

Why sign Kapanen when you have Hoglander and Podkolzin to sign soon?

I think we will be fine for the next 3-ish years. Hoglander and Podkolzin can be bridged at around 3M each for 2-3 years. Once those expire then we'll probably have to move a forward like Pearson or Kapanen for sure or maybe even Garland, but at that point we'll be moving them for positive value. But for now, Kapanen strengthens our top-9.

I know @Richard88 is a fan of trading for Miller, I’m not nor do I think Sakic is interested in parting with significant pieces for a guy destined to leave at the end of his contract because the Avs will have to re-sign MacKinnon, Byram and Newhook throw in decisions on EJ and Compher in the same off season.

I don't HATE the Pens trade, but I'm not sure what kind of return Hextall would be looking for if he moved Kapanen. I think it's fair, but Hextall has gone on record that he's only looking for hockey trades, but who knows if he'll be forced to bend on that given the Pens cap situation.

Adding a 2nd on top of Barron, 1st, and Jost seems excessive. Remove the 2nd and the Vancouver 4th and it's probably fair.

Sakic moved a significant piece in Barrie for 3 playoff runs with Kadri. With that in mind, moving Barron for 2 playoff runs with Miller at a very, very cheap AAV isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Sakic has also shown that he's comfortable with letting guys walk in UFA, like Grubauer and Saad recently, and probably also Kadri, so I don't see why he'd be averse to doing that with Miller.

Which piece do you think they need?

Barrie wasn’t cost controlled and was scheduled to be a UFA at the end of the next season that COL had built in replacements for him in Makar and Girard. Kadri’s replacement is on the roster in Newhook. With Barrie they traded a year for 3 years, with this they are trading 2 high end cost controlled assets for years, for a guy that plays a position that isn’t a weakness. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to add Miller, but at the price of a contributing roster player the top d prospect a 1st rd and 2nd rd pick gtfo. If somebody were willing to give up that package for Miller he’d be gone already.

1. a goalie if kuemper and francouz can't put together a good run.

2. a physical defense first defender.

Based on Kadri's suspension history and Newhook being a rookie I'd say that center depth could be a weakness, especially when facing teams in the east, or Eichel/Karlsson/Stephenson in the west.

Also, the price of Barron + 1st+ 2nd + Jost is not one i'd pay either. Barron + 1st seems reasonable. Jost is a contributing roster player, but he's far from irreplaceable. Maltsev is already arguably a better 4C than him, at the very least with faceoffs as well as being more physical.

Realistically Sakic has made his bed with Kuemper, having paid a lot for him. Adding a 3rd stringer at the deadline is probably likely though, like Hutchinson or JJ.

Regarding a physical defensive Dman, I agree that would be a nice addition., especially a RHD. I wonder if Helleson could be given a shot btw, especially if he has a good olympics. His style of game would be perfect for what the team needs on defense.

Bro come on, you want to site Kadri and suspensions on one hand and ignore the fact a guy like Eichel hasn’t played in over a year? You’re moving the yard marker to fit your argument. And for what it’s worth I take MacKinnon, Kadri, Newhook, Jost 1C-4C over probably any team in the west, and don’t try to sell me on EDM. I’m not arguing Jost is irreplaceable, but I also don’t think the Avs expected Newhook to be able to handle 3C this well this fast, I’ve ragged them for messing up Jost’s development they haven’t messed up Newhook. I don’t think Miller plays center in COL and no way am I giving up the 1st AND Barron. Agree to disagree on this one my friend.

Pittsburgh trade is terrible for Vancouver, they absolutely shouldn't be giving up on Klimovich. Personally, I value Klimovich more than Kapanen

Second, wft is the Arizona trade??? Dicksinson is absolutely not a cap dump, Canucks are NOT paying to get rid of him. Dickinson has been very good for Vancouver, especially since the coaching change, he just had some difficulty finding a permanent spot in the lineup

Also, Pearson is not a cap dump, Vancouver could easily net a 2nd rounder for Pearson with the way he's playing

I'm still saying easy no on these Miller trades. Too rich for a guy the Avs don't really need, nor can most likely afford to re-sign. As I've said before there is a reason Barron is always in these trades. He's highly rated and RHD. It's funny how he's in almost every trade but then dismissed as 'not being that good' most of the time.

At some point a GM needs to realise when the team's window is open. This team's window is open most wide the next two years, especially this year before the off-season when the entire 2ns line hit UFA and need raises. Adding Miller with retention secures a deep C core to rival or beat any in the league for the next two years. A prospect like Barron could turn into a top four Dman or he could become nothing more than a replacement level guy; better and more highly rated prospects than him have busted. And a late first could be another Kaut, Bowers, Bleackley, Hishon, etc. Maybe Miller isn't the guy you want but this is definitely prime time to go for it if you're Sakic. He'll never have a better team with as many value contracts as he has right now, and opportunistically the west is also weaker than usual this year which creates a perfect opportunity to go for it.
