Improving the middle six

Created by: TJTwolf
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 21, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'll be totally honest that I have no idea on Brown's value. I'm really kind of guessing. He does however seem the ideal kind of target for the Avs in the middle 6. Thoughts?
Trades
COL
  1. Brown, Connor ($1,800,000 retained)
Additional Details:
The Avs pick up a guy who slots in nicely into the middle 6 as an improved version of JTC. A Swiss army knife type. Retention could be less if necessary to make it work.
OTT
  1. Aubé-Kubel, Nicolas
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
A second seems about the right kind of pick for Brown. Maybe the Avs add another lesser prospect or low pick due to it being in 2023? Aubé-Kubel has been good for the Avs and still looks a promising player regardless of being a waiver pick up, and is added as a young replacement roster player for the retention. Ottawa still makes a saving (this year at least) which is sure to please their tight-wad owners lol.

LOL! I have added the 'codicil' I have honestly no idea on his value, so I'm open to that. If Sens fans (and neutrals, who are often the better gauge of a player's value, as they don't have a dog in the fight so to speak) believe that's the case then so be it. I don't even think it would be unreasonable if it puts the Avs over the top.

I'm a huge fan of Brown. I wonder if OTT would be looking at a Blake Coleman type return for him though

It's possible I guess. As I think about it more, I'm more happy with the idea of giving up a first for him as it would be late 2023 bar something going badly wrong. Not sure I'd be willing to part with a prospect of the calibre needed to match the Coleman trade though.

Id be fine with a 1st + a Bowers/Kaut/Ranta/Beaucage caliber prospect. I wouldn't move any of our higher tier prospects for him though

Yep I could roll with something like that as well. Exactly what I was thinking when I said about the calibre. As long as we're not talking in the Byram, Newhook, Barron, Olausson etc class there's possibly a deal to be made.

I think Coleman is a great comparison. If Brown moves at the deadline for 50% then both of them would have been moved with a year and a half left on their deals and both at 1.8m against the cap.

A late first and an A/B prospect is likely fair. Honestly I don’t know a ton about the Avs system but I doubt the Sens would want to bring Bowers back. If the framework of a 1st and a prospect is sound then I think there’s a deal to be had, just need to find the right prospect.

I think as UpsideDownQue said, if we exclude Bowers because the Sens wouldn't want him back then Kaut, Ranta or Beaucage would all be good possibilities and I'd be good with that. I think Ranta and Kaut are probably regarded as the higher of the B level prospects so given that it would be a likely late first in '23 then one of those two and I'd be good with that. Thanks for the input.

Senators don't move Brown unless it's a massive overpayment. He's a top 6 RW a position were not that deep in. He's on pace for 60 points this season. The 30th overall pick plus a meh prospect doesn't really do anything for us. We don't need picks/prospects, we need time for our young guys to grow and we need veterans like Brown to insulate them.

I’ve heard good things about Behrens. Is he closer to the beacauge group or the Byram group?

Fair comment, though I'd question the description of a 'meh prospect'.

Tricky one. Probably somewhere in between. High hockey IQ, positioning etc but his skating is apparently his weakness. There's time for him to work on that though.
