Mayfield is a reasonable top 4 defenseman who adds some of that 'playoff grit'. He's also on a good deal that doesn't require extra cap moves and has an extra years term. He will cost more.

the 3rd is arguably worth more than the 2 players the isles are getting let alone adding mayfield on top of that. Hard pass

Why would NYI would want to trade him away? TML fans haven't answer that question yet...

as an isles fan, we need to restock the prospect pipeline and he's a valuable player we could get solid assets from, plus once pulock comes back it seems like he's been overtaken by dobson on the depth chart so he's expendable to a degree. but he's still cheap and useful so i don't think they would move him right now unless they get a good package of prospects and/or picks. next year at the deadline if they're out of it is another story but it would take a fair bit to get them to move him imo.

He is a stay at home, slow moving, doesn't handle the puck defenceman. He is a square peg for the round hole system TO uses. It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't understand that teams use different systems.

Right? All leaf players are cap dumps that the Leafs need to send 1st rounders with to move.

Are you going to trade half of the team as well so you can get better personal to fit a system that would make Mayfield a viable player? Because he certainly doesn't have the skills necessary to succeed in a puck possession system. Asking a square peg to fit in a round hole isn't a wise plan. But most fans on here seem to not understand that teams employ systems many have different systems. TO and the Islanders are about as different system wise as any two teams can be. But I guess that means a 3rd pair defenceman on a defense only, dump and chase team is going to be a 2nd pair shutdown defenceman on a quick puck moving possession team. Because that makes total sense when all you know about hockey is playing video games.

Because Islander fans know he's a limited player that definitely isn't going to succeed outside of the Trotz clog the middle of the defensive zone and just dump and chase.

The Islanders have some of the worst possession stats in the league. It's a systematic thing, they let other teams hold the puck in their zone for long stretches but protect the middle of the ice. That means the defence don't really need to stray far from their zones. Mayfield being a big slow bruiser works in that system. Make him carry the puck and you'll see his lack of puck skills and skating as a major problem. The Leafs should have no interest in what he brings to the table. Would be a major issue for their system.

This is a horrible trade for the Islanders, Mayfield is a legit top 4 shutdown D man, so the price is likely similar to Chiarot's price. I would even argue he has much more value than Chariot because his cap hit is smaller and he has an extra year of term.

His goals for % is 30 percent. That's very bad.
