Description
Apparently, #TheRags are in on Churchrun... but, I don't really get it. The only way it makes sense in my headcannon, is making it a direct upgrade over K'Andre Miller. Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense cap wise, or depth chart wise. Miller will absolutely be a 2nd pairing defensemen... heck, he's a good one right now. Churchrun isn't a rental, he's a long term commitment. I'm not sure why the Rangers are in the running. Hopefully it's just a bad rumor.

Alternately, you can really sub in any of the former 1st round pick defensemen in for Miller (Nils, Schneider, etc), but that just pushes the cap/depth chart problem back a couple of years with Miller remaining. If they Rangers do happen to keep Miller, then they have to figure out Nemeth and his absolute bonehead M-NTC in a separate trade (either before the deadline, or in the off season).

This is all based on the rumor that the Coyotes have received an offer of 2 former 1st round picks and a 2022 1st round pick for Churchrun, and that allegedly Kravstov has been offered from NYR.

With this current roster, #NextYearRangers have 16 contracts signed and 7.9million in cap space. Doable, but really tight... tighter than the current plan. Though, I guess it will work out since all the expiring ELCs are having really bad years...

That M-NTC by Nemeth could block it. I normally try not to bank on those since it's tricky. I have to assume ARI will be on his 8 team no trade list. I still don't understand why you'd give a 3rd pairing D a clause, but such is life, eh...

Yeah that was weird for sure. I thought they’d have Jones on the 3rd pair to start the year anywyas. I like K’Andre but idk if I’m his biggest fan. Like I’d be all for this trade . I don’t understand why people hate on Chychrun trade as if he’s a 28 year old declining D with injuries. He’s 23 lmao on a good contract.

It's just tough when you look at the depth chart and impending cap troubles. Lindgren-Fox are married, they should never be split up. It'd have to be Chychrun-Trouba, which either puts Miller in the trade, or on the 3rd pairing which probably isn't good for his growth. He's definitely not the best defenseman in the world, but he shows flashes of strong 2nd pairing potential for sure. Good on both sides, but still young and makes some mistakes.

For me like you say, it'd have to absolutely include Nemeth going somewhere as well. Since all the other young kids are really struggling, the Rangers definitely need to re-sign Ryan Strome now. It'd be detrimental if they lose him in free agency. The cap with Nemeth + Chych makes it nearly impossible to sign Strome next year. Even if you take Nemeth out, it's still incredibly tight. That's my biggest reason for not being a fan of this trade. All the times Rangers fan (definitely myself included) had trading Strome, or putting Chytil on the 2nd line... he just isn't panning out, at least not yet. Strome has to return. He's gonna get at least 5million, if not closer to 6million, so I'm not sure bringing on Chychrun would help that unless some other drastic moves are made

Currently with Chych it'd be 16 contracts signed and 7.9million in cap space next year, take out Nemeth and that's 15 contracts and 10.4mil. We'll say Strome gets 5.5 and that's 16 contracts with 4.9mil space, and you need a backup goalie and Kakko. Even without Nemeth, that's tough

I just don't see it any other way, personally. I think it'd take Hedman or Josi coming to the Rangers to split up Lindgren-Fox... they have that unteachable chemistry. I'm not sure if Miller will ever be "as good" as Chychrun was last year, but not sure the gap is worth giving up the farm, especially since Miller still has a way to go. Besides the probable cap problems this trade would bring

U trying to compete now or in 3 years with even less cap space than they do now. Choose wisely .

This is the thing. The gap between Miller and Chychrun isnt so massive that we need to give up a 1st and Kravtsov just to get ARI to consider it.

If they dont play their cards right it will be only now and no longer after. You gonna put all your eggs into one unpredictable basket and mortgage your entire future and cap space on it?

If you trade for Chychrun, Strome's fate is all but sealed leaving the team with only 1 center, Zib. Assuming that they follow this up with a trade for Miller with retention. Even with the retention it doesnt leave much room for a contract extension for Kakko, leaving him exposed to an offer sheet.

There’s 0 chance to sign Strome right now for next year

Theres a chance if he gives them the discount some are expecting, sub-6m. However, if Strome is legitimately priced out and goes for the payday (which I wouldnt blame him one bit for doing), then the more important move for the Rangers is to make the trade for Miller.
