Anybody who wants Chiarot will pay a first, it’s been reported by every credible person in the business. If they aren’t the team that is willing to give it up then they won’t be the one getting him, but I think he’s a good match for them. You can pretty much substitute St, Louis for any other team interested: Calgary, Rangers, Toronto, Washington, Florida (will have to be prospects they don’t have a first).

The narrative that Chiarot is worth a first is crazy off. Same with Lehkonen

How much are you willing to bet? I’d put up a thousand right now that the return for Chiarot includes a first. Lehkonen, no. He will likely net a 2nd. Most people believe Habs will get a first, the people who don’t aren’t paying enough attention and that’s not an insult, just an observation. Go look at the past deadlines. Look at the deadline market for Dmen, it’s Chiarot and De Haan.. that’s pretty much it. Think about Chiarot’s value in the playoffs where less penalties are called, he gets away with murder and is downright dominate. There will be a bidding war between the teams I listed. What did Savard go for last deadline? Foligno? Coleman a couple years ago, Montour, Dzingle, Athanasiou etc. this isn’t a new thing. It’s every deadline.

Detroit doesn't need another RHD and I'm sorry but I can't see anyone giving up a 2nd for a 34yr old dman with a cap hit of $6.25M for the next 3 seasons.

Yeah that’s the trade I am least confident about. That said there is a connection to Petry and Michigan as that is where he is from. If Petry were playing like his usual self he would net a bigger return than the 2nd, but he isn’t. This is kind of dependent on him having a better 2nd half of the season than the first half. With all that said there was an article released the other day in which someone spoke to executives and they said Petry does still have value and multiple teams will jump if he is available. They view his sluggish play as no different than any other player on the Habs. The quote was “yeah he’s had a tough year, but who in Mtl hasn’t” so take that for what you will I guess. I still lean on the side that he sticks around for the remainder of his contract as a veteran for the young guys. The only team I see even taking a chance on him is Detroit because of said ties to the city and Detroit wanting to take the next step forward and supplement the kids on that team, but again I don’t think it’s likely. As for them already having Seider and Hronek that is a fair point, but Hronek has played on the left at times this season if I’m not mistaken.

The Petry to Detroit wishful thinking trades are starting to emulate the Drouin trades from last year.

I honestly don't hate the idea of Petry to Detroit but I can't see them giving up assets for him right now. The only reason I like him going to the wings is to be a veteran partner for Edvinsson. His 15 team clause might handcuff the Habs from trading him to the few teams that might be interested. I also believe getting that money off the books is more beneficial for the Habs than it is for the Wings if they were to acquire him. I could see him going for anything from a second to Montreal adding a sweetener, depends what teams are interested.

I like the name👍 Yeah it is wishful thinking, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I did however acknowledge that it is unlikely.

Yeah I definitely thought about that, but I made the trade assuming (actually hoping) that Petry has a much better 2nd half of the season (he has already started to pick it up a bit) I kind of looked at the Leddy deal as a starting point. It’s tough because had Petry not had this terrible start to the season he would be worth quite a bit especially to a team like Detroit who is not worried at all about the cap. He’ll be gone before they have to pay all of their young core.

Oh, I don't think that he sucks. I think that if and when he returns to health, he'll be fine where he is. He just doesn't fit a team getting younger and on the rise, and his intergalactically-awful contract doesn't fit the Los Angeles financial structure. We're not going to be paying a 32-year-old middle-6 forward $9 million.

Go look at his comparables at 6 mill. That’s what he is worth. He’s 29 not 35, his contract is up when hes 34 not 40. LA has a group of players around his age (Danault being one of them) and they had no problem paying any of them just last season not to mention Kopitar and Doughty who are what, 4 years older than him and still kicking. I think they’re closer to competing than you do. They have great vets, really good players in their prime and some stars coming up who will be on cheap contracts. It’s the perfect recipe. The perfect retool and they are really lucky to be in such a weak division. They’ll be in the playoffs every year imo. Retool is over. But I think we’ll end up disagreeing here anyway. I think it makes a lot of sense for both teams. The relationship between LA and Vilardi seems tarnished. 5 years since he was drafted now. They have no room down the middle and he seems pretty adamant about playing centre.

LA can't afford another long term 3rd line player with a $4M+ cap hit. Danault has that market cornered already. If Montreal wants to retain 50% of his contract, then maybe.

VIlardi missed pretty much all of two seasons with a degenerative back disease, so saying he's had 5 years to make it is being disingenuous. He had a very good training camp this year, but injuries and COVID threw a wrench in those plans. He got sent back to the AHL to restore his confidence and has been playing well in his time down there. I suspect he'll get recalled after the Olympic break. Anyone who says the relationship is strained doesn't know what they're talking about.

Famous "Kenny-isms"

1. Tie goes to the vet
2. Vets have earned stock in this league
3. When you have a power forward like Abdelkader, you have to lock him up
4. I have to put a team on the ice next season
5. Trades are hard
6. I can't just go to a hockey store and buy a top 4 Defenseman
7. Getting back an injured player is the same as making a trade at the trade deadline

12. Danny Dekeyser is an elite Defenseman in this league
13. I'll retire when Nick Lidstrom retires. (I wish)
14. Jimmy Howard gives our team a chance to win every night
15. I don't know why UFA's don't want to sign here
16. We need to go on a run

He was complaining a couple months ago about playing wing, that’s his long term position with the Kings. Maybe he’ll be okay with that but I doubt it. Also Gallagher is top 10 in 5v5 goals in the entire league over the last 5 years. If that to you is a 3rd liner then you don’t know hockey and I’m not surprised with you being an LA hockey fan…

He wasn't complaining. He was asked by a reporter whether he preferred playing center or wing, and he honestly replied that he thought he was better as and preferred playing center, but that he would play wherever the team needed him to.

Gallagher is a 3rd liner on the Kings. The only reason they'd consider bringing him in is due to his chemistry with Danault. He might be a "second liner" for a season, but Danault's long term future with the Kings is at 3C, meaning Gallagher would be a 3RW. I actually don't mind a 3rd line of Moore-Danault-Gallagher. That would be one of the best 3rd lines in the league. But the Kings can't afford to have a 3rd line with a $16M cap hit.

When we’re talking about “lines” we’re talking about 5v5. Danault and Gallagher both produce top 6 numbers at 5v5. I get your argument that in the future they will be lowered on the depth chart because of the younger guys moving up the depth chart. I’m not sure that’s the case though. Kopitar will be 35 this summer with 2 years left. Byfield is clearly the heir to the throne on the first line, but why wouldn’t Danault be on the 2nd line? I don’t think they paid him 5.5 mill to ever play in the bottom 6. That would be insane. Btw Arvidsson - Danault - Gally would be a dominate line similar to the Tatar - Danault - Gally line in Mtl. That was our first line, it would be LA’s second. That is extremely enticing. Kopitar’s 10 mill coming off the books by the time any of the young players have to be signed solves the cap issue (if there even was one to begin with) in this upcoming offseason they have Brown, Maatta, Athanasiou and Edler (unless they resign him) coming off the books so I think there short term cap looks really good and there long term cap looks really good. Im not saying they absolutely will make a move for Gally but I don’t think it’s as absurd as you do.

When we’re talking about “lines” we’re talking about 5v5. Danault and Gallagher both produce top 6 numbers at 5v5. They absolutely signed him with the intention of being the 3C. He even acknowledged as much in his media interviews right after the news broke of his signing:

Eventually Kopitar will be demoted to 2C, but he's going to play in that role for the foreseeable future. He'll re-sign a new contract once his current one expires and will be with the team until at least the end of Danault's contract. He's not showing any signs of slowing down.

I don't think acquiring Gallagher is absurd. I do think that taking on Gallagher's $6.5M cap hit is absurd though. $4M tops or he just doesn't fit in the Kings' long-term plans. They have too many top quality prospects that can potentially fill the same role for entry-level cap hits.

You you think Kopitar in his 37-38 year old season is still going to be useful? I doubt it honestly. Even if he gets re-signed I don’t see that as an issue because it’ll probably only be for a few mill. I think by then he’ll be below even Danault on the depth chart. I personally don’t see the Kings having someone who can fill the hole Gally would. I see Gally filling the hole that Brown leaves behind. Right now LA doesn’t have a winger on their roster better than Gally so he doesn’t have to be married to Danault there. I see Turcotte as a winger so there is one guy potentially above him in a couple years, Kaliyev is a power play assassin but will never have the same 5v5 impact. I don’t see LA as the only fit for Gallagher, maybe they wouldn’t be interested at 6 mill, but I still think it’s possible. Agree to disagree.

Yes. I think Kopitar is still a top 5 center in the NHL and will be a top six guy until he's 40 (a la Joe Thornton). His new contract won't have an eight figure cap hit, but I expect it to be in the $6M-7M range.

I'd take both Kempe and Iafallo over Gallagher.
