Small Shake-Ups at the Deadline

Created by: LukaTAG
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2022
Published: Jan. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A big trade with Buffalo is the only one here. Shakes us up on D and adds a good player to that fourth line, along with making us deeper in case of injury with Hagg (I think he clears waivers?). Liljegren steps in for either Miller or Pysyk in around half the games, and the cost is worth it IMO.
Trades
TOR
  1. Girgensons, Zemgus ($1,100,000 retained)
  2. Hägg, Robert
  3. Miller, Colin ($1,937,500 retained)
  4. Pysyk, Mark
Additional Details:
Two solid underrated defensemen Buffalo doesn't need and Hagg and Zengus for some good depth.
BUF
  1. Dermott, Travis
  2. Holl, Justin
  3. Ritchie, Nick
  4. 2023 3rd round pick (TOR)
  5. 2023 6th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Two cap dumps and a solid young D in Dermott who will get a lot of minutes along with a third and sixth-round pick.

Buffalo won't want to take any of those 3 players back because they will occupy spots on the depth chart next year.

Is that not what they need? Players with term?

Sabres won't trade Girgensons, They will just trade Hagg for draft picks and will probably try and extend Pysyk.

could get better returns trading miller elsewhere, the only piece you think is good is dermott who would play behind dahlin, power, samuelsson, bryson, and then prospects like ryan johnson

How does taking half the defence from a much worse defensive team make the Leafs better? Holl and Dermott are better than what's coming back. Engvall is having a terrific season and is hands down ELITE defensively. Fans just don't know anything

Fine, take Dermott & Pysyk off, swap Girgensons for Bjork? Hagg is going for draft picks in this case.

You're not going to get more than a 3rd for Miller.

Holl is plain dog**** this season, Dermott is going back for value, Pysyk has amazing defensive stats this season, and Miller is a great, great bottom pair defenseman.

Add a mid-round pick I guess? Toronto will find another defenseman before they pay a 2nd to get Miller and dump Ritchie and Holl.

Buffalo easy pass, we could just get picks for these players instead of the players we don't need.

Both Pysyk and Miller have far inferior stats to Holl. Across the board, both are negative, Holl is not. He had a tough stretch but has rebounded. This is simply not understanding hockey, the system TO plays or really anything. The grass is greener BS that all players from worse teams are better than Leaf players. It's silly

Holl has negative value eh? Top 4, big right handed defenceman who unlike Miller and all the guys going to the Leafs here, has a track record of being good in a top 6 defensive team. Funny how being a top 4 guy on a better team makes someone negative. I guess the guy getting more money who has been thrown out by Boston, then Vegas and now is incredible because he's one of the best on a bad team. Yeah Miller is the one with value, not the better player, playing on a better team.

Corsi, Fenwick, shot share, expected goals against %, scoring chance %, high danger scoring chance %. You name it, Holl is significantly better than all the guys coming back. So is Dermott. And Engvall is downright ELITE defensively.

Not at all. They have prospects that are knocking on the door who are better than those 3. Bringing them in just takes away ice-time and opportunity for them. When their defense next year comprises of Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson, Jokiharju, and Bryson, they need to resign Pysyk and then replacement level players. Up front they have Asplund, Girgensons and Okposo to be 4th liners and Ritchie isn't worth having over prospects in their top-6. They will look to sell Miller, Hinostroza, Hagg, etc. for picks and prospects to continue adding to the rebuild. Throwing in replacement level or sub-replacement level vets is a bad idea.

I'm now looking at Miller's and Holl's metrics on EH and Miller's looks better. Huh?

Across the board Holl is better on Natural Statrick. Also fans writing stories on fan blogs doesn't matter much to me.

Yea, Ritchie is a cap dump but don't know who the other is. Do you really think trading two NHLers from the Leafs for three Buffalo Dman make Leafs defence better.

Depth on Sabres? Gee, the three guys are starters on the Leafs.

What does it matter what they write if the Evolving-Hockey metrics show that Miller is better than Holl this season. Don't act like you're not the same fan of the site on the internet.
