Part 1 Plan for SJ GM Sell at the 2022 Trade Deadline

Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2022
Published: Jan. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With EK65, Labanc, and Knyzhov out until mid-March at the earliest, no sense to try and remain competitive this season (especially when it'll take another month at least to get those guys back up to speed conditioning-wise too).

See Part 2 for 2022-23 season roster:
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3018481

STEP 1

Trade Hertl to a competitive team and get back some futures, all the while having a handshake deal in place for him to come back to SJ in the offseason. Here I have him going to Boston as SJ get back a likely quality future #1 goaltender in Swayman. The key here is that Swayman's 23 and so SJ can use him as the starter as soon as next season. SJ will be looking to reset next season instead of going for a full rebuild, and so they don't need teenager prospects -- they need prospects ready to step in to fill big roles for next season, and in Swayman's case, he's already getting NHL training as the backup in Boston this season. You trade Hertl with the intention of resigning him next offseason. If Hertl's ambivalent, then you do everything you can to sign him and not risk letting him get traded without getting him back. If he makes it clear that he's not coming back no matter what (very unlikely), then you trade him for even more assets by doing a sign-and-trade to a place he likes.

STEP 2

Sell off the expiring deal of Barabanov and a quality goalie in Reimer. With the points he's had and the way he's playing, Barabanov will easily fetch at least a 2nd and Washington, with all those cool Russians, is a great place that can use him for a cup run (and could also sign him longterm if things work out). Reimer will should easily fetch a 2nd and a 4th to a competing team, especially as he's at a good cap hit and signed for another year too.

STEP 3

Acquire Chytil from NYR. It's clear that Gallant's not a fan of Chytil and that he's not really working out in NYR. Bonino immediately replaces Chytil's role and provides excellent defensive play for two seasons for NY, while Cogliano provides quality hard-hitting defensive wing play on the bottom line.

Yea, this is just because of SJ selling off and having no one else but I see his upside on a new team as a capable 3C (he's a 3C in my Part 2 post).

Hertl isn't returning a young goalie of that caliber/potential and a 1st

Keep in mind, I don’t think theres any realistic chance boston trades swayman for a rental. If you take out the first, I think it’s really worth thinking about, but theres a 0.0% chance they’re trading Swayman and a first for a rental.

I would do a 2nd and Swayman. He’s been awesome at every level he’s played at and he could be a steal for a rental.

That's kinda my point. Swayman looks like he has pretty high potential. Rask is probably done after this year (maybe even still this year with the way he's been playing), I just don't see them giving him up for a rental even with Ullmark there

Boston’s pick is currently 19th.

They are not doing that. Swayman won’t be traded for a rental, probably not at all.

That's a no for Boston. They've already say Swayman is the future #1 of the Bruins

This is all fair. I can see Hertl going to a team like NYR for Lundkvist + a 1st as well.

In any case, the point of my post is to recoup strong assets for Hertl. And there'll be quality young players available for him.

Couple things regarding Rask:
1. I think he should probably be given a little slack given that he didn’t get to play for a long time due to surgery. Were it not for a covid shut down, he would have worked out the kinks in the AHL. Even still, he’s looked fantastic in two of his starts. I’m far from worried.
2. I think there’s close to a 0% chance he’s done after this year. He wouldn’t have had this surgery/6 months of rehab if he were going to retire after a couple more months of hockey.

My prediction is 1st/Kravstov for Hertl. We shall see.

Let's hope sanity prevails and you are correct. Would hate to go the same route with Swayman that Leafs fans have with Rask for all these years.

Hertl to the Rangers for Lundkvist and a first, that's the team and deal that makes the most sense. You might even be able to squeeze out another asset as well.

Lundkvist+Chytil+a late 1st is a deal I'd be super happy with if I'm SJ, and it's one that's reasonable for NYR to do.

It's a win/win and those are the best kind of trades and the ones that can actually get done.
