I know he has been decent in PGH but they are paying him more against the cap, on a multi year deal with a FULL NMC at his age! ARE YOU NUTS?

The 2nd year is kinda risky for a 37 year-old, but he looks rejuvenated since arriving in PIT so who knows.

I like it

Gonna be unpopular opinion but I think with this, Rodrigues is gone for next season as since Malkin came back his production has dropped from that incredible run he had filling in for him.

But hey someone will go overpay for him as a free agent to bring him in as their 2c (Minnesota maybe) and Nylander (Alex) can take his spot on the wing come 2022-2023

I voted no, but I don't think it's too bad. He just turned 37 and will be 39 mid of the 23-24 season. I just wish it was a 1 year deal but it's whatever, idk if that nmc was necessary though lol

Carter’s been good this year but 3mil and a NMC for a 37 YO…. He could fall off a cliff anytime

he is on a 27g 60p pace this season

if he regresses a bit and still plays at a 17g 50p pace from a 3rd liner this is still a good deal

also a proven playoff performer, so its really not to bad

Good for him. I'm glad to see he has revitalized his career. I'll have to break out my Carter jersey for the one game per season that he comes to Staples Center.

The moment I read "Minnesota maybe" made me think of that god awful Martin Hanzal trade. I sure hope Billy Guerin doesn't do this and learn from Chuck Flether's mistake

Giving mutli year deals for someone over 35 is always a bad idea to a degree. This doesn't look bad at the moment but this signing could go off the rails very quickly.

There not trading for him. Someone in FA is gonna overpay to bring him in as a free agent to be their 2c.

As why would Penguins trade Rodrigues now when they trying to peruse a cup. But most likely after this season hes gonna leave as a UFA

Sorry, long day of work. Thought you meant, trade carter to Minnesota. My apologies. I reread your original comment and see what you meant.

After all the Bob McKenzie crap a couple seasons ago where everyone speculated he would retire if traded, I don't blame him for wanting a NMC to not have to deal with that again.

I dont mind Carter wanting one, my issue is a team giving into this demand.

I'm more curious why they chose to front-load the contract. Under the new CBA MoU, a 35+ contract that isn't front-loaded isn't subject to the 35+ penalties if the contract ends early. By front loading the deal, the contract now has to stay on the books in its entirety, even if it's bought out or if Carter decides to retire early.

It's fine. The NMC isn't a huge deal for a player on a two year deal at that price. If the Penguins are trying to trade him in year two of that deal, they have a lot of issues.

The cap hit is fine for how he's producing this year and he gives the team a solid 3C. This isn't like the Leafs giving Marleau $6,250,000x3 at the same age, which was insane.

The important part is that this seems to indicate that the Penguins are trying to compete and not rebuild, which means the other free agents should be coming back too.
