i see your point. you also have to consider that Bedard is 16, is already 10-ish pounds more than Hughes, and has 2 years to grow. Caufield is only good when he has an elite playmaker dishing it to him lol; he's pretty overrated. Hughes is breaking out lately as well. time will tell
it's not really a weight issue though with guys like Bedard and Hughes. It's just a size issue. You're talking about a guy who is listed at 5'9 he's probably smaller than that to be honest. Much like they list Hughes at 510 and 5'11 but they stood him next to Crosby, who is also listed in the 5'11 to 5'10 range and he looked 2 inches shorter. Everyone knows Crosby isn't the biggest player.
So you get guys getting smaller and smaller and guys lean on them. One could say Crosby did it, but lets be real on that, he's a generational talent.
Point being, what you can get away with changes. Hughes shows that. His game simply is not the same game he got away with playing prior. The numbers reflect that. Even if you look at his numbers this year and say they jumped, he's still losing battles all over the ice, which is why he's not winning on the ice. He's like a -10 or something out there in 20 some games. While +/- isn't the greatest stat, you need your star guys who you are planning to pay 8 mil per to be on the positive side of things and when they are consistently not, it's telling. As those are the guys who are suppose to really help turn the team around.
I don't know, like I said, Bedard really did impress at wjc. Matter of fact, the contrast between him and Wright was the biggest thing I took away from WJC. One stood out the other was just there and looked frankly not ready and flat footed. But I also noticed his play was a lot of things that aren't going to work at the NHL level. They lanes will get smaller, the defensemen will take away the cross ice passes and everyone else will be playing at the same speed. People on the NHL level will also be a whole lot more willing to stand him up, much like they do to Hughes. Which is why I don't think he's gonna have the impact people think he's gonna have.
He still has time though, but it's not hard to tell guys who are instantly going to shine. It was clear as day watching Stutzle and Jarvis play. They didn't need gimmicks to make their mark on the ice. The speed, stick handing and stop and start foot work was just miles ahead and pro level. They didn't have holes in the game and they weren't just taking advantage of weaker players. Where looking at Bedard, a lot of those cross ice and slip behind a guy moves aren't going to work at the next level. Which means the game as he plays it now, is going to have to change. Much like Hughes is having to change his to much less success. That's just my take on it.
