Next year re-signing Kane and Oilers picks

Description
No matter how well Kane does, I don't think next year is the year to sign him to a multi year deal. I would give him another 1 year deal and if he walks, then he walks. He was found money after all. After this year, I might give him a 2 year 5M deal IF he keeps producing at a good rate. He's a good fit hockey wise, but I don't want him getting too comfortable by giving him multi-year deals.

JP and Yamo are playing well and doing things that don't show up on the score sheet. End of the day, production is important. I don't think he'll get the big contract this summer, I could see us bridging them for a couple years to maximize bringing in other guys. After this year, Neal, Smith, Lucic, Sekera come off the books.

Trading Barrie for a cheaper, shutdown D along with a pick would be good for the Oilers. Clears some cap, and serves a purpose.

While we're on the topic, assuming the Oilers make the playoffs and their pick is in the 20s, I hope they draft RHD - we have no future at that position outside of Bouchard. Luneau, Lamouriex, Salomonsson - all have some size. I'd draft the one we think is the best. There's also smaller guys like Casey and Nelson.

This is the first time that I've really thought this, so bear with me...I feel like I'd want to see Kane play in the actual lineup before I start worrying about next year. Sure, it's "found money", but he's also stepping into an NHL lineup for the first time since May, in the middle of a desperate attempt to set up a playoff run...I feel like we've all taking it as a given that he'll step right in and produce, when in actual fact he's a difficult situation that's coming into a difficult situation.

Could be 100% wrong, but just a thought that popped into my head.

Don't think they will have enough to re-sign Kane. Also, Kane is looking for another big payday to pay off his debt.. They have other important holes to fix such as the defense and goaltending.

I'm doubting Oilers can rid themselves of 4.5m Barrie so easily.....And that goaltending. Oilers should pray the Keith retires.

I’m completely against moving Barrie. That’s a move once made can’t be just undone. Guys with his production history are incredibly hard to get. Niemelianen adds some of that shut down ability looking for. Just because Bouchard is looking good doesn’t mean it’s wise to put all the puck moving on him.

It's not because Bouchard is looking. It's more about needing a different element in our defence. We have Bouchard, Barrie, Keith, and Ceci who don't necessarily play physical enough and I don't think Ceci will land anything of value, and I don't think we're looking to move Bouchard. So I think Barrie is the one to go get that piece. He's a good player, that's why he'll get you something of value. I would like to see an Adam Larsson type of defenceman on the right side of our defence.

It starts with raising expectations on the guys we have nurse and Keith are veterans that have shown to have more of a physical presence than we have been seeing. Adding Niemelianen also goes a long long way. Bouchard isn’t a small boy either he could start leaning on people more. Just about every team need in my opinion is either in that locker room or in Bakersfield just needs to be put together.

I don't see an Adam Larsson type defenceman in Bakersfield at all. And definitely not on the roster right now. What I do see are three defencemen who play almost the same way in Keith, Barrie, and Bouchard. This is whyI'm saying that we need a better mix and we can't trade Keith, and we're not trading Bouchard so the logical answer is Barrie.

I’d say Niemelianen brings a lot of what larsson did. Actually I’d go even further to say he brings it cleaner than larsson who made it habit to crosscheck. Out of our main top six defenders only Barrie is under 6 feet tall and all range from 190-220 pounds this problem could be more on Tippett than current personal. Replacing a puck mover of his caliber is going to be incredibly difficult.

He does, and I'm sure he will next season. But I would say, I have 3 guys that I can count on to move the puck around now in Nurse, Bouchard, and Keith.

Next year I'd like to see:

Nurse - ????
???? (maybe this is Niemalienen) - Bouchard
Keith - Ceci

Every puck moving dman will have/should have a reliable shutdown partner.

Why not just go with nurse and Barrie? Last season they were fantastic together. I don’t think the one puck mover and one shut down guy works as well as it sounds. Nurse Barrie as an example sure nurse can shut players down but what made them work soo well last year is both very mobile covering more ice and winning races to pucks consistently granted will throw credit smiths way being healthy he cuts down those races dramatically.
