I've asked this a lot but haven't really gotten a good answer, why would any team want to spend assets on Barrie for the next two seasons? Second assist heavy, his numbers plummet when he's not on the ice with McDavid and essentially a PP specialist at this point. His value is by far the highest it will ever be in Edmonton but it would be way lower if he were playing anywhere else.

That TOR trade will never happen from TOs side. Koskinen worthless, lagessen the AHL version of Dermott.

I'd say it's worth it just to get out of Mrazek's contract.

he is a pp specialist and his only upside is his offensive ability, you nailed it. but (despite what some may think) Barrie is and has been a very consistent and skilled offensive defender for the vast majority of his career and there are a number of teams out there who lack puck moving defenders and/or a defender to run their pp for them.

teams are not gonna pay for him to be a shutdown defender, because that’s not what he is. of they give him sheltered minutes on the third pair and run him as a pp specialist he will likely thrive. especially if it’s a place where he’s needed and put into a position to thrive

it frees up roughly 2M in cap space immediately with an extra 4.5M coming off at the end of the season. they also receive a second which can be used in another trade and a young/cheap depth defender incase of injuries. lastly it gets them out of Mrazeks contract which helps resign Campbell

Except they are worse when they are trying to be a contender

I can live with that. Obviously a little more palatable if he was paid less and a UFA but I get what you're saying. Flames went out and probably paid a bit too much for Gustafsson a couple years back for the same role, Barrie obviously does it better but I get where you are coming from.

let me rephrase it then. this allows them to do other moves right now. gives them a backup who comes off the books after this season, frees up 2M-ish in cap space to all for them to add better players & gives them a 2nd which is a relatively valuable asset that they can use at the tdl.

sometimes moves, even when you’re trying to contend have to drastically improve your team. sometimes they are just pre-moves to allow for other things to take place

Except now they have to find someone who can play in the top 4 and a reliable backup on top of fill their other goals. This is 2 steps back for a maybe step forward

He's not Koskinen, there's nothing to get out from under, offseason he can moved quite easily for a song if needed, plenty of teams with goalie issues and his cap is reasonable

So it frees up 2 million? At the cost of downgrading the defense (no more depth) and the back up goalie is downgraded, that 2 million of freed up space won't upgrade Holls spot or Mrazeks on their own let alone both. There are far better trades to be had than just handing the Oilers a freebie
