Description
Varlamov to Edmonton for a 2nd is just a guess - I think a move happens at some point, just not sure if it's Edmonton this year at the deadline or somewhere else over the summer. And I think they'd aim to get picks/prospects for him as opposed to someone who helps the team in 2022-23.

Halak is a basic placeholder - if they trade Varlamov, I assume they take a flyer on one of the veteran UFA goalies. I like the idea of him(or Greiss!) coming back and doing one more year on the Island behind Sorokin.

The big move is Forsberg - I think 6x6.5 is a good spot to aim for, I wouldn't go above 6x7. I also think that term could have them in play for Hertl or Gaudreau - 1 of those 3 would play in the top 6 and on the top PP unit.

I could easily see them trying to keep Clutter at a short term/low AAV if he's open to it - he's not what he used to be but has been somewhat useful this year. I think that 4LW spot has to rotate between Bellows/Johnston with Martin getting some run occasionally too.

I don't know if they would go with Salo/Bolduc as the 2/3 LD behind Pelech, but I think the way these D pairs are set up gives you that strong first pair and 2 solid second pairs that each have a puck mover and a more traditional d-man.

They're not moving some of those contracts that everyone wants to move (Baily/Palmieri/JGP, etc) but something as simple as signing a decent winger like Forsberg lets them move enough guys around to have some offense on all 4 lines.

betting Nashville will offer Forsberg 8.5 so anyone wanting to lure him away will need to do better , Forsberg may have looked for a change of scenery but the Pred resurgence this year likley means he stays.

It's a flat cap league. There's only been one forward who's signed for an AAV about $6.5M since the flat cap was instated, and Taylor Hall only got one year on that deal. Every other contract with an AAV that high since then has either been an extension or an RFA getting some UFA years bought out.

I'm not saying it can't happen, I'm just saying that I'd be surprised to see something that high for any of the UFA forwards this summer(Forsberg, Gaudreau, Hertl). They're all good but recent history is working against them.

exactly why he won't leave Nashville , keep in mind there is no tax on earned income in Tennesee making the deal even more lucrative

you overpay for ufas, why would forsberg take less than lee when he is better? youre in fantays land if you think hes taking that to sign in a place where they are going downhill

Lee's deal was signed in July 2019, before the flat cap, when the salary cap had been increasing an average of $2.9M per season since the last lockout. There's no way he signs for 7x7 if he's a UFA today.

maybe it's leftover jitters from living through the John Tavares walk year, but it's hard to not feel like he's gonna test UFA if he hasn't signed an extension yet. and $8.5M feels too rich for him - the only wingers who've signed for that much AAV in the last two seasons are Brayden Point, Kirill Kaprizov, and Alex Ovechkin. If his agent can get him included in that group, mazel tov, but I think $7.5M is the absolute ceiling for him (which would still fit under the cap in this hypothetical.)

edit: spelled Brayden Point wrong, oops

if he signs for more than $7.5M AAV, i'll be happy to have the Islanders bow out. He's a solid 25-30 goals per year, sure, but paying him for his walk year where all of a sudden he turns into a 60 goal guy(or whatever his current pace is at) is gonna be rough.

I think that 6years/$6.5-7.5M spot that I've carved out here should be enough for one the other UFA wingers that can score like Hertl/Burakovsky/Gaudreau.
