Easy decline for the Avs as well. Two 1st round picks for bottom-6 players? No thanks.

Edmonton's 2022 2nd round pick is not in play, it can't be until they are certain they will not trigger the conditions in the Duncan Keith trade.

Setting that aside, it looks like the priorities for the Oilers are now goaltending and a physical veteran defender capable of killing penalties and playing up to 20-minutes/game when necessary. If they are adding more forwards, they are likely to be looking for size and grit. Johansson and Appleton do not fit that description, but Kassian does. The only reason to move Kassian is to relieve cap space for other moves. He gets a lot of hate from certain fans, primarily because of his tendency to go unnoticeable for stretches. When he's on though, he is exactly what the Oilers need in the post season. If he's moved by the TDL, the trade will have to improve the team's playoff potential. Johansson and Appleton don't don't do that.

and he's 5 years younger, considerably cheaper, an RFA and is much more dependable in the playoffs

He's having a great year, can't deny that, but Newhook will more than likely be Kadri's replacement. He's cheaper and younger than McCann, and has proven capable of handling the role. Don't get me wrong, I love McCann's game. Strong defensively and showing he can score more than 30 pts a year, but is that worth Barron + '23 1st to me? I can't say that it is.

COL isn’t trading a 1st and their top d prospect for 2 bottom 6 guys. McCann is at best the 3C when/if Kadri leaves via FA because Newhook slots in at 2C. Donato isn’t a significant upgrade over any of LOC, Jost or Compher. Barron is very likely the 6th dman in COL next fall and having him as the regular 6th on his elc just allows the Avs to spend more on the 2nd line. You don’t trade premium assets like that for guys that a destined for your 3rd and 4th line.

Kudos for not only the courteous contribution to a respectful and intelligent discussion but also the first person in living memory to spell "role" properly.

Agreed, there's nothing here worth Samorukov and 2 2nds. I think Edmonton would be pretty interested in Soucy or Oleksiak though.

Doesn't EDM have to make the SCF for that to happen? If you have any level of belief that achievement is in the realm of possibility, I have a bridge over a mountain in Regina for ya.

I agree, the odds are slim-to-none. However, those were the same odds Montreal faced last year.

Even if Holland wanted to be reckless with that draft pick, he is probably not going to trade it for that package from Seattle.
