Description
Vegas has an obvious need to shed salary, and Detroit has an obvious need at center. This seems like it could be a pretty good deal for both sides, but valuing Willy is tricky to me. He's still an NHL caliber center, but has underperformed as of late and has had some injury trouble.

His contract also has quite a bit of term on it, which is good news or bad news depending on your perspective. I think it would be an interesting trade, I just have no idea what Vegas would want going the other way for him. Obviously, he'd have to waive his NTC as well if Detroit was on it.

Interesting...Karlsson would be a great 2C for us, and it would help Vegas shed a bit of salary to fit Eichel. I wonder what Vegas would want for him...?

Even though its for the purpose of the cap dump I think Karlsson still deserves decent value in return. I'd ask for a 2nd and a solid prospect. Maybe Hanas, Berggren or Wallinder

Yeah that's what I couldn't figure out, but he's definitely a "buy low" type of player.

And if that was the case I don't think Stevie would be willing to make the deal. Highly doubt he wants to give up prospects or draft assets given what we've seen so far

Berggren is virtually untouchable, so that's not happening. Wallinder also has too much potential to deal. I think I'd entertain a 2nd and Hanas though.

Maybe? Could see Vegas saying yes to that

They can their pick of Hanas, Tuomisto, McIsaac or Mastrosimone. I wouldn't deal Niederbach.

I'd be fine with that too.

I just look at this roster and say they're a 2C and 2-3 new defensemen away from actually competing for a playoff spot next season. 2Cs are always expensive on the open market, and even though there are going to be some good ones available in the offseason, I think Detroit could save a few bucks by getting a guy who's cap controlled for awhile.

Devil's advocate: Karlsson is older than our entire core, doesn't look any better than Suter on paper, and is signed until age 34. Why would we want him?

I feel like Dvorak is probably a reasonable comp trade-wise. Different money, but Karlsson>Dvorak. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for, but he's a pretty good option long-term for the Wings.

Valid point, I think the best answer to this question is who do they currently have in the system that projects at a 2C?

Honestly that would be a decent solution as well. Wings may have a center of the future or two in the system, but if the goal is to compete, they need a 2C of right now as well

The best we've got is Suter, so I think the answer to your question is no. Theodor Niederbach might project to 2C, but that's a few years away. Otherwise, our options are to draft, trade, or sign a FA (Hertl, Copp, Trocheck).

Copp would be a great addition

For sure. Hertl or Copp would be incredible.
