“Bail out”….lol. These are useable pieces here, if a GM thinks they can make their team better, they are going to do it. When an asset has value to multiple teams, it doesn’t matter what our cap situation is, it’s a supply and demand thing. Smith and Dadanov are VERY useable pieces, smith being a rental will appeal to AtLeast a dozen teams. I’m so tired of the GMs won’t help Vegas narrative, they are helping themselves. This isn’t a long contract with jacked up salary. Come on….
Smith is a UFA after this year and wouldn't affect next season's cap(also I'm not even sure if you'd *want* to trade him at the deadline this year, seeing as he's one of VGK's top scorers plus he's an "original" Golden Knight" on a team with Cup aspirations). Dadonov has been fine, but nothing special, and an extra year at $5M + his 10 team NTC is going to make him slightly more difficult to move (and if you just got traded from the basement in Ottawa to a Cup contender in Vegas, wouldn't *you* try your best to stick around and not get moved?)
Even if you find a way to move Dadonov before next season, now you're looking at a team with 13 players under contract and just Dadonov's $5M in cap space. You've got Nicolas Hague, Brett Howden, Nicolas Roy, Kolesar, Miromanov, and Brooks as RFAs looking at raises (not to mention trying to replace Smith & Janmark). It might take more than a 4th/6th combo, but you're not getting the Devon Toews deal (2 2nds). If a team really wants him, all they have to do is sign him to a $3.5-4M offer sheet, and he's theirs for just a 2nd.
