Year 1 of the real pain

Created by: JayTea
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2022
Published: Feb. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This assumes the reported $1m salary cap increase. Halak can be any veteran goalie who would be ok with coming in knowing they’ll be splitting starts with Kahkonen and the team will be riding the hot goalie.
Benn can be any depth defenseman.
Overall this team should be very similar to the team they have this year, so they should still be able to compete.

Maybe. He's still definitely finding his footing as a NHL goalie so I could see them signing him to a bridge contract and continue to have him share starts with another goalie. How much do you think he'll get and for how long?

I'd call the Avs the western Leafs, but the Avs at least make the 2nd round before choking.

It's not really a third line, they tend to use the top 3 lines fairly evenly so the players are spread out.

It's actually the 2nd line, the Wild role 4 lines equally more or less. The Greenway-JEE-Foligno line is listed as 2nd here solely because it see's the most TOI shutting down opposing teams top lines.

Fiala is a top line player worthy of the price tag considering his market value is $9M. So that's a pretty ignorant comment on your behalf.

The Wild have been a middle of the pack team their entire existence; rarely bad enough to draft top 10. Years of Fletcher's drafting was meh at best, which hasn't left them much to work with so the fact they're playing as well as they are when every year people pick them to miss the playoffs is something. You're the one making it seem like your team is run ideally when they've failed to meet expectations in the last 2 seasons. But hey since you're the one bringing up ancient history, the two teams have met 3 times in the playoffs and the Avs have lost twice to the mess of a franchise you're chirping on. lol

For real. He wants to try to dunk on the Wild when his team has lost twice to them in the playoffs. If the Wild are terrible, what does that make the Avs then? lol

Not sure where I stated that my team is run "ideally." As for failing to meet expectations, yeah, losing to Vegas last year sucked, but we're looking alright so far this year. And yeah, ancient history might be on your side, but the future sure as hell isn't. Guerin's baffling decision to buy them both out is going to blow for you guys, and I almost feel bad for Wild fans, almost. Hope you guys can hold onto the core and build from there, but until 25-26, pain. Lots of pain.

If this is next year, I'm happy with it. I think you're close on Kaapo. I don't see him making any more than that.

Also, If Fiala will take 7.5x5, I'd be ecstatic. But I'm expecting a two to three year deal.

Is there some pain, sure. But if anything these posts show we have the depth and prospects to get through it and still compete at the same time. Having a top 3 prospect pool will do that for a franchise.

O no doubt, deep ass prospect pool, but will it be enough to compete? Or are you staring down another period of being middle of the pack? And say you're looking great one year and have a chance at the cup, Guerin's going to have to get REAL creative to add anything at the TDL.

You didn't say they were run ideally, but you certainly implied it saying you were happy to be an Avs fan looking at the cap situation of the Wild over the next few years.

As for the buyouts, addition by subtraction. Getting Parise and Suter out of the locker-room and letting some new voices lead the team has reenergized the team imo. The dead cap sucks, but Parise was pretty much dead cap anyhow and rather than risk him retiring, just cut ties and plan around the dead cap. Suter was better than Parise, but I still think he was a problem going back to him complaining about having to play with Dumba and that BS years ago of bringing in Adam Oates to help them work on the power play behind Yeo's back. On the plus side, it means Guerin will have to put the phone down on July 1st and wait for some bargains later on.

I'd guess $7.5m x 5 year is a compromise on giving him more years to bring the cost down a bit. Honestly as long as they sign him for 3 years at around $7.5m, the rest should work.

See you guys in the playoffs! Have fun with the bipolar goalie that you guys think will win you a cup. We also have his number and dude can't stop a puck against the wild (Kuemper)

I'll be honest, I was thrilled when the Avs signed Kuemps. We're so deep inside his head.

I would imagine with how the locker room has completely changed, the success the wild are having, and finally getting a linemate that he really gels with, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fiala take a 3 year deal around 6-7mill. (one comp is Buchnevich, who just signed for $5.8aav with similar production). That would mean Fiala is a FA right when the wild get $14mill in cap relief and he will only be 28yo. could easily get a 6x$8 at that point.
