offseason on LI

Created by: LIhockeyfan
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2022
Published: Feb. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmonton trade needs no explanation and they have to be willing to part with the pick to get the goalie

Arizona may also need to consider this offer. JC is a stellar defenseman yes but how many teams will trade multiple guys in their starting roster when they're acquiring him to win a championship. they get a 1st 2nd and 3rd plus a young defenseman that has proven he can play and develop at the NHL level. obviously im biased but it should be a considered offer.

Buffalo move is strictly cap purposes and they can afford to add on the contract for one year and get the pick as incentive. no return

OTT takes on 2 years at 75% and also receives a 2nd plus a prospect with upside that has good numbers in AHL also for basically no return

Palmieri is bought out because his trade value is nothing

Vegas realistically will not be able to afford Roy next year with all the contracts they will have already so they get a replacement C to put in their system and a 2nd round pick for RFA rights

Francouz replaces Varlamov as a backup to Sorokin and Vladdy signs to fill the middle six gap from Bailey and Palms

1. not enough for Chychrun sadly

2. no reason to trade panik, this team has more space than his buried cap hit of 250k

3. trading bailey makes no sense especially in that trade

4. i doubt vegas moves Roy when they can just move Dadonov

5. zadorov.

this team probably isnt much better than this years team even with the Chych underpay

Vegas is at the cap for next season with only 14 players signed, if they move Dadonov they then have his $5M to fill out the rest of that roster. I think throwing in Newkirk (or whoever else from the middle of the Isles prospects list) along with that 2 would be the Gentleman's Offer Sheet - if they really wanted to turn the screws, they could just sign Roy to an actual offer sheet up to $4.1M and only surrender that 2nd.

That being said, I don't see why you'd sign Zadorov for 4x4 to play LD3 with Bolduc in the system - even if he's not ready next year, you could just sign a UFA guy like Edler/Staal/whoever to keep the seat warm for a year instead of burning that cap. And Francouz 3x3.5 seems like a lot to invest in a guy you're hoping only plays 25ish games - I think you could sign a true backup like Jaro Halak for $1.5M and have more cap room for Barzal's eventual deal after 2022-23.

I think we’d have to thrown in Beauviller in the Chychrun deal if we’d want them to consider looking at his trade value via Arizona, I think we could actually get a better deal for Bailey I think a team or two might be interested in him

I also think the Islanders should just give Roy an RFA offer like 3 million I don’t think Vegas could match

i mean we're literally posting on the site that says that Vegas has the following cap commitments next year:

Eichel: $10M
Stone: $9.5M
Pietrangelo: $8.8M
Pacioretty: $7M
Karlsson: $5.9M
Martinez: $5.25M
Theodore: $5.2M
Marchessault: $5M
Dadonov: $5M
Lehner: $5M
McNabb: $2.85M
Whitecloud: $2.75M
Stephenson: $2.75M
Brossoit: $2.325M
Carrier: $1.4M
Patrick: $1.2M

So I forgot they don't count LTIR/Non-Roster players in their roster size calculations, but that's still 16 guys and $79.925 in cap hit. Even if you add 7 guys making the absolute minimum at $750K, you're adding $5.25M to that cap hit. They're going to have to get *very* creative to run out that lineup next year, and I don't think the other 31 GMs are going to be going out of their way to help them out.

It's not out of the question that the Islanders(or anyone else) could offer sheet Roy at $3-4M AAV, and either make the Knights match and have to do even more cap gymnastics, or sign him away for the cost of just a 2nd.

My point was filling out 35-40% of your roster with 5M was a lot more feasible several years ago. Nowadays, 5M does not go so far, unless they don't mind having their two bottom lines and bottom D pairing getting smashed against the rocks every night.
