Some people just dont live in the same reality I do.

2022 is a strange time where you never know if someone is a troll or serious.

Ok, let say you are serious.

Low picks are worth next to nothing and some are even missing, including 2nds.

The only comparable I have is when NYI offered all their picks of a year draft, including 4th overall, to move up 2 spots. CLB rejected the offer.

Most of all, a team would be stupid to trade for that bundle since they have a 50 contracts limit. Even if they drafted good players, they would loose most of them to UFA before they had time to develop. And what a mess would be their AHL team...

The value would be lower than 2 late 1st IMO.

Go to hockeydb.com you can sort by team or by draft year and take a look at how many players from later rounds make it. A few years back I was looking at the later rounds and wondering since a lot of good players don't put up a lot of points so how do you classify a good role player and 100 games played was the number of games that most consider a successful career.

I agree with @jpsnow13 a lot of those picks as just picks aren't worth that much but some of the players Montreal has drafted after the 2nd round turned out to be very good in not great players. It doesn't happen all the time but missing out on a player like Brendan Gallagher, Yannick Weber, Mark Streit, Tomas Plekanec, Francois Beauchemin, Jaroslav Halak or Andrei Markov for small return from a traded pick, Is it worth it it?

Yet but I'm pretty sure Columbus was dumb as hell to reject that trade offer, moving down two spots to still be in the top five and basically double your draft capita is insane. You never know what you're going to hit with those picks and with hindsight I'd argue that NYI had a better draft with Pelech in the 3rd round than Columbus with Murray.

They were not "Dumb as hell" ro refuse NYI's offer at all.

You only say that because Murray wasnt a good choice in hindsight. If Columbus drafted Reilly, Lindholm or Vasilevski instead, you would call CLB dumb to accept a bunch of low value picks instead.

Bottom line, you always want to draft as high as possible and the value of draft picks (aka chances to get a good player) exponentially shrinks as you go down.

I'd do it any given day cause I see the draft like Bergevin, the more shot you take, the higher the chances you get someone making it to the NHL, if it was like football and guys were drafted NHL ready that would be a different story but when drafting 18 year old kids you just don't know. We're talking about 2 spots in the top 4 so even if CLB goes and picks Lindholm, there are still almost a dozen other guys in the first round that are worth the trade down (Rielly, Dumba, Forsberg, Faksa, Wilson, Hertl, Teravainen, Vasi, Skjei). By doing so you then double your odds of hitting on a Hellebuyck, Kerfoot, Lindell, Andersen, Parayko, Ghost, Pelech, Anderson, Slavin, McGinn and much more, some picks can be traded for next year (A 2012 4th for a 2013 3rd) and then your odds are just getting better with every move. One guy can't change your franchise except when a generational talent passes by every ten year, Murray wasn't a generational talent even on draft day, even if NYI takes the right guy it doesn't change their franchise around.
