Severson

Created by: KingDavis
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 9, 2022
Published: Feb. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think in order for NJ to trade Severson, they’ll have to receive an offer they couldn’t refuse.

For Toronto, they would be acquiring a top 4 Right Handed shot D for two playoff runs. Since he is right handed, it costs more to acquire him.

For NJ, they get RD with top 4 potential along with 2 second rounders. They also receive Ritchie for cap purposes.

I think Leafs accept this trade as they will also be retaining their first round picks to help build their prospect pool while acquiring a top 4 RD. NJ may need a little bit more (such as adding Kuokkanen for Liljegren in this deal and taking away a second rounder) but I think getting Niemala for Severson would be a great piece.

Thoughts?

No thanks from the Leafs. Leafs can get rid of Ritchie next summer if necessary relatively cheap, but Severson's 4.1m contract can't be handled the Leafs. And I wonder if Severson really wants to play in pressure situation with a good team He was so poor against the Leafs in the two games last week, I wonder if was doing a Shane Doan, " I can prolong my career, by not playing playoff games"

The Leafs fall over themselves accepting this deal. You aimed way too low for a top 4 RHD with term. The comparable trade for Severson starts with the LA-Toronto Muzzin trade in which the Leafs moved a 1st, a good prospect and a B prospect.

This doesn’t get halfway to Severson. A offer they cannot refuse would include Knies, Niemela and a pick (and not Ritchie). Devils should be re-signing Sevs.

While he went too low, you went way too high. You wouldn't get both Knies and Niemala. You are talking about a prospect much further down the depth charts for the Leafs to go with Niemala. Someone along the lines of a Tverberg or a Villeneuve.

“An offer they cannot refuse”

Devils are in no position to be selling top-4 d-men. We have a fishnet in goal, Subban leaving and a lot of prospects who aren’t ready yet. They best thing for all our young core’s development includes quality d-men on blue line. So, I would think they would have to be convinced.

You are sadly mistaken if you think the Devils could realistically get two of the Leafs top 3 prospects. I’m at least trying to be realistic. Also, I’m not convinced the Devils would want to keep Severson since he’ll be 29 years old by the time his next contract kicks in. I’m also not convinced Severson would even want to re-sign with the Devils.

I probably lowballed the offer too much yes. Instead of a second rounder, it’d probably be a first and something else while Devils retaining money on Severson’s deal.

I view Niemala as a much better prospect than Grundstrom and Durzi.

“I am being realistic”…”I am lowballing”…at least you corrected yourself on that.

Ritchie would cost a pick to move, so you are valuing Severson at B+ prospect and a 2nd round pick. A top-4 d-man on a very good contract for two years. Risto got more than that for 1-year. Even Savard got a 1st for a few months. Severson is a lot better than either of those two.

The Devil need solid play on their blueline for next two years a lot more than they need a 2nd round pick and Niemela.

I mean if you are going to use quotations then at least use them properly lol. I said “I’m trying to be realistic” not “I am being realistic” and I said “I probably lowballed” not “I am lowballing”. At least do the minimum dude.

But yeah I agree. Probably would be something like a first, second and a third, instead of two seconds. Or take Ritchie out of the trade and have it be Sevo for Niemala, 1st rounder, and something smaller like a 3rd.

Though I do disagree with keeping Severson just because we need a solid defender. I like Severson a lot, but if a good offer comes for him, I’m taking it. This season is what it is so it’s really just next season you’ll have to worry about and also I worry about signing a 29 year old Severson to a long contract.

I somewhat agree with this
But this is what I see. Devils would want as much value for Severson as possible, Leafs want top 4 RD
Devils ask: 1st, Niemela, Knies
Leafs ask: 1st, 3rd, Holl
If a fair deal is done, I think it would be: 1st and Niemela

I saw Auston Matthews play poorly in two games in the playoffs against the Habs last year. Does this apply to him too?

Yeah I think that’s a better offer than the one I created. Maybe Devils try to get one of Holl/Dermott/Liljegren just as a placeholder until Hughes and Niemala are ready.

???? But the Leafs have two top 4 who play the right side......Brodie and Holl. The difference between Holl and Severson certainly isn't a 1st. Niemela and Leafs taking on 2.16m in additional cap.

How bad has he been?. 20 plus minutes a game. Plays against top lines and big minutes on the PK. Leafs are sixth in GAA, and 4th in PK. Holl has third best plus minus among Leafs Dmen.
I know according to CF followers only Reilly and Brodie are the only Leafs genuine Dmen NHLers.

Severson plays 23+ minutes a night against top lines and plays a lot on special teams
PK and GA are a team stat, not individual stats
