Description
To me, this is both realistic and an upgrade. Maybe Seattle wants a little more in the form of a prospect or pick but they aren't retaining so maybe they go for something like this.

Sorry, I edited to add a defensive prospect to make it maybe more realistic for Seattle. Should see it now.

I see it now. I like both Soucy and Jarnkrok as trade targets. I wonder if it would be worth adding something extra to get SEA to retain on Soucy to make the cap situation a bit easier to deal with next year

Well, Richard88 said in another post that it's likely Francis wants a 1st for Soucy for the extra year but I'm thinking he needs young players so maybe you give him a replacement for Soucy in the form of Helleson or Barron instead and ask for retention in the realm of $.5M. The cap situation next year is actually not bad so I think if that's the deal-breaker, you don't ask for it.

I could see a trade like this. But I bet Seattle wants jost. They already passed on compher once

I could see both Jarnkrok and Soucy being targets, both would fill clear needs for the team. Soucy would be a solid Graves replacement and insurance incase Byram can't play again this or next year.

That said I'm not sure there's a high enough piece in this trade to appease Francis. He overplayed his hand by insisting on high prices at the expansion draft which suggests that he'll drive a hard bargain at the deadline too.

True enough but they'd get further assets coming back their way in this deal.

im just saying if its Jost for compher swapped in the deal, it still works. I dont see the value between Compher and Jost that different

Probably not but I'd be willing to go for a 2nd and Helleson or Barron which would probably at least get his attention. I don't see Joe sending Philly a 1st for Giroux so, unless Claude says he'll only accept a trade to the Avs, there will likely be a bidding war and Joe just doesn't do stuff like that unless backed into a corner the way he was with the G position this past offseason. He might surprise us but it's a long shot.

Jost is better defensively but, yeah, if that was what they wanted, I could see that being tempting.

Jost is better defensively but compher has the better offensive track record, they are interchangeable in deadline deals IMO. Just the cap hits of 2m vs 3.5m swing which way the avs need to go depending on what sort of cap is coming back.

I really do like the Soucy target, I was wondering about that swap for a while, for that Byram insurance this year and a nice cost controlled piece for the 3rd pair next season.
I could live in a world that Soucy EJ were your 3rd pair with Jack Johnson as your signed 7th and Barron on his ELC sliding in and out as needed. If Byram is healthy that D core is legit

JTC heading out makes everything work with the cap while Seattle would need to retain about $800K to make the money work if it's Jost; maybe Seattle does that if Jost is the guy they want? The extra year of Soucy would be very nice to have.

I never know how things work bc of cap is calculated daily, etc, so maybe its not as drastic of how much that needs to be retained if anything at all bc of that.
but yeah if they had to retain on Järnkrok a few 100k to make it all work, I dont see that being a big issue, I would even trade away helm if I had a voice in this so the avs played Maltsev over him haha

Helleson or Barron in a deal for Jarnkrok and/or Soucy? Easy pass on that.

Maltsev would be playing more in the NHL this year if he didn't have that convenient waivers exemption with Jost and Helm getting the vet/familiarity preference. His stats have been great and I suspect that he's making it easier for Sakic to consider moving Jost in a Giroux trade given that Maltsev's metrics have been so great and would make him an easy replacement at 4C. In 18 games this year Maltsev has a 55.60% in Corsi, leads the team in hits/60 at 5v5; leads the team in takeaways/60; and is 57.89% on faceoffs. He's gone pointless offensively largely thanks to a low on-ice shot% of 2.60% and 92.5 PDO (i.e. he's been very unlucky), but in the AHL this year he has 22 points in 30 games (and 9 in 33 games with NJ last year), so the scoring should come.
