Considering Hughes has said he was going to target more guys that are flying under the radar than not that trade sums it up. You get a mid 20 first in a deep class, a prospect that plays like he can be our next Lehkonen, a roster player and a 5th rounder in which you hope to land on a Garland, Gallagher, Bear, Terry or Helleybuck. For a guy about to turn 30 that won't be of any need in a rebuild that's pretty damn good.

Armchair GMs were putting returns with Zary or Coronato but let's not forget it was with some salary retention on about 90% of them so if you count that out we aren't far off value wise.

And to everyone stating 'Oh the top 10 protection is stupid'. Yes Calgary has some games in hand but Edmonton's gonna buy guys to get into the playoffs and LA is likely also going to make moves. At the end of the day there's still over 30 games to play so calm down they may be looking out at some point in the future if a wheel falls off the carriage.

Oh well, we got fair value for the rebuild and another roster spot for a young player. Win-Win. Wish Toffoli best of luck!

they probably stick pitlick in a spot not sure though

Rem? Sure. I don't think Tyler has any realistic shot at this roster

That first round draft pick being top 10 protected seems pointless. Calgary is sitting in a playoff spot right now with games at hand and now they have Toffoli coming in to help them so it just seems like a pointless stipulation

The Flames thought they would be in the bottom 10 conditional in the draft, after receiving Toffoli?? Yikes. That tells me Treliving was already thinking the Flames could bottom out, and get a bottom 10.

solid deal,
It's all about the term here.
2+ years of term has value on a guy who's scored a lot of goals the past 89 games.
Given the low cap hit as 4.5 for the expected production he's bringing in, it's a real solid deal.
CGY does need to score more goals if they are going to be a real contender in the west. High flying teams like VGK and COL are loaded. So you have to keep up in the arms race.

I love this deal for the Flames. Considering the questionable future of Gaudreau and Tkachuk and their lack of reliable forward depth, Toffoli is the perfect add. With his top 6 pedigree and his well-valued contract with term, he’ll be a significant part of the Flames’ future.

The Canadiens still get a good return for him though, even if the Flames come out on top for now. Really, I’m just interested in seeing how much worse this Canadiens team can get after they finish up the fire sale.

What a terrible return for a player with .80 ppg!
1st, meh prospect , 5th, cap dump.
One of pelltier, zary, Coronato HAD to be part of it.
We should've kept him, or waited till other teams offered more.
Fleece by treiveling.
CGY WIN

I think Calgary overpaid slightly. You overrate your players. Tofolli isn't a "0.80" ppg player. He's a 0.7 this year and career 0.6

He's a good 2nd line winger or okay 1st line winger. You got a first and a prospect. That's a good return...

No it just says that he is a smart enough manager to hedge his bet

Colorado had this condition on their pick this year. It’s just protection on the off chance the Flames do fall out of the playoffs and win the lottery they aren’t giving up a high pick by accident. And Montréal doesn’t care if it’s included, because they know that’s extremely unlikely anyways.

This looks even on paper but we all know how Toffoli plays in his first year on a new team

Honestly, considering what Buchnevich + Arvidsson got in the offseason, this is great value in the dead cap era.

Yeah pretty tough stats considering he's still shooting a lot through these 30 games, he's carrying a 3.8% shot percentage in that time span. At the end of the day he still had a goal in the only game that mattered so some might not like what they've gotten on the stretch but the fact that he was there at the right time might put a band aid on the rest. Now he's got two more years at 4.25 millions so let's see if he picks it up at some point.

It will end up being a good trade for both teams I think. You have to take into context that Montreal isn't competing right now and doesn't need him. Even if he is a good middle 6 winger, doesn't help us right now.

Toffoli has been really good for the Flames this year. Easily been one of our best players

Is currently on pace to beat his career high in goals and Points

Great player. Worked well for both teams. Toffoli hurts us as we're rebuilding and we got some good futures out of the deal. Glad it's working for Calgary though.
