That first round draft pick being top 10 protected seems pointless. Calgary is sitting in a playoff spot right now with games at hand and now they have Toffoli coming in to help them so it just seems like a pointless stipulation

What a terrible return for a player with .80 ppg!
1st, meh prospect , 5th, cap dump.
One of pelltier, zary, Coronato HAD to be part of it.
We should've kept him, or waited till other teams offered more.

As a Flames fan, you never fully know with this team. Smart of BT to have a very "just-in-case" clause if things go off the rails.

Good trade for Calgary, with a deep draft class MTL could get value later on. Toffolli is the real winner though.

Fair trade. Both teams get what they wanted.

Montreal trades away a top 6 29 YO sniper who's not going to be in his prime when Montreal wants to compete. Gets a 1st + B/B+ Prospect.

Calgary gets a top 6 forward to help them win in the short term while not giving up any of their top prospects.

I see what you're saying, but your reasoning is exactly why it isn't pointless... Calgary is protecting themselves in case of the very off chance they fall of a cliff and get a top 10 pick...
Imagine how bad Calgary would look if they fell of a cliff and then had traded away a top 10 pick or worse, a lottery pick.
