Revisiting Miller

Created by: NMAvsFan
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2022
Published: Feb. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Any interest here from Vancouver? Is the package good enough to get you to bite or are there other pieces you want? You're getting quantity to both make the money work and because Miller has an extra year which is enticing to the Avs but are you high enough on Barron and happy enough with the 1st to feel like you got a good deal?

my guess would be 1st, 2nd, and helleson. or 1st, 1st, helleson with retention.

I thought about something like that, too. But I'd think they would prefer to not retain given that he has another year but maybe they would do that rather than take on JTC. Why do you think they'd rather have Helleson? I know he's maybe ranked a little higher by some but he seems to have more upside and potential than Helleson.

i think helleson is probably the best prospect the avs are willing to move. teams very rarely move their top prospect anymore so i expect the avs to keep barron and maybe olausson.

It's quite a bit coming back to Van in terms of quantity.
Just not sure if they are the right pieces.
The 2023 pick isn't great because plenty of other teams would get them a 2022 pick.
If I was Van I would rather get a 2022 1st and a better prospect. That might be just me

Yeah, I know they'd rather have the pick be for this year but that's what the extra guys are for in some ways because Kaut is NHL ready and cheap while Ranta has high upside while also being young and cheap. Barron is a pretty good prospect and is NHL ready. He could become a 3-4 guy pretty readily plus he is also young and cheap. So, the Canucks get a lot of cost-controlled young players under contract plus the 1st and, in this scenario, a guy (Compher) that can play multiple positions up and down the lineup and only has one year left on his deal so they can cut him loose if they don't like him. It'll be interesting to see if he goes and, if so, what the return is.

I'd be reluctant to part with OO and Barron, for sure. But Miller with another year is a pretty good get and would fill some spots going forward in the short-term as well as help them right now. I consider a trade like this to be unlikely but I like it better than spending the same or similar assets for someone like Giroux who doesn't have that extra year.

Too much if you ask me, especially with no retention. Prior feedback on a few of my tries was that Barron, Ranta, 1st with retention was about right.

Honestly, the only piece of that trade package I'd have interest in would be Baron. Waiting a year for a late 1st round pick doesn't seem worth it, Kaut and Ranta might be NHL players someday but feel like too much of a gamble, and Compher, I'm guess was included to make cap space, doesn't help us in the long term.

Too much quantity not enough quality IMO. I think Van would prefer Jost over Compher as the roster player, his age fits better.

Honestly though I don't see a trade with Colorado that doesn't involve Newhook and I know avs fans are very against moving him. If Byram were healthy that would be another option but right now that's too risky.

A trade around Baron and 1st would work, but the other parts would have to hashed out. Colorado has the pieces if they want to get this done and depending on what the other contenders do, they may very well feel they have to..

He's not a rental if he still has another year left, right?

Jost is a possibility but Newhook is a non-starter, I would think. Byram would be a good get for the Canucks but I can't see the Avs wanting to do that, either.

The team is already obviously very good but, yeah, as they see what other teams do, they may feel they have to do something to match their adds. But Sakic is pretty shrewd and reluctant to overpay so it may end up being out of reach for him.

I do wonder if the Toffoli deal pushed the price on Miller up, though. That being said, Toffoli has two more years left so that does make a difference.

Byram doesn't make sense because of his health issues. The guy unfortunately may never play again. Jost is a nice additional piece. Maybe something around Baron, Jost, 1st gets things started but I don't think it's enough.

He’s a guy you can’t re-sign but you’d be ok giving up a 1st their top d prospect, arguably their 2nd and 3rd best forward prospects and valuable middle 6 guy for a 2nd line guy? Yeah pass on that.

Realistically it should cost 3 quality prospects/picks (Rutherford has been asking for four) which Sakic will have to consider depending on how close he thinks they are.

Sakic is a shrewd GM, and as such I don’t think he worries about what other teams are doing I don’t think he feels pressure like that.

No, I don't think he'll chase just to try to "keep up" considering how good the team is already. I still see him making a few minor adds in the bottom six and depth D, possibly a 3rd goalie but I can't see him making a big splash when the team is already top 3 in the league.

Agree totally with one exception, Giroux. If Giroux takes the stance he will only take a trade to COL making the price more affordable I think they do that.
