I think this is the first VAN trade I think works out well for both sides, although I do expect some VAN fans to disagree.

Not really. Hoglander is on his ELC and Kapanen isn't. The idea is to make cap room not eat up more. Never mind that there really isn't a lot of upside to adding Kapanen. At this point he's just another guy.

The trade making sense for either team is a matter of debate. The value is not.

If someone who consistently scores at a 15 to 20 goal pace and mid 40's points is "just another guy" then we can really end the conversation now.

I don't think Kapanen holds the value to get a 20yr old playing in his second season already, regardless of whether this makes sense for the teams involved. Kapanen's ice time has been dropping as he's falling out of favor in Pittsburgh and the points aren't there lately.

Pens fans won't like it but I think Dickinson for Kapanen makes a lot more sense. Their ATOI is similar, Dickinson is a year older, dickinson is a really good defensive forward and can PK but is a black hole offensively. Pittsburgh doesn't really need more scoring but they could use a defensively minded forward in the bottom six.

We have that entire 4th line that is a defensive/physical line. It's quite the opposite actually. We need scoring not defensive forwards

finally we have some recognition of what the real issue on the penguins is. A real scoring winger is needed.

But here is the issue.
Hoglander is all of 5'2 and the penguins don't really want that.
They have stated, and made, the commitment to get BIGGER, in the top 6.
He does not fit that.
This puts EVERY winger on the penguins under 6' tall in the top 6.
They aren't going to do that. No matter how you flip it, they aren't going to do that.
Just look at the moves the GM and Burke have made. None of them screams 5'2 winger.

Kappy is OK. In the context of trading a younger cheaper player with arguably more upside than him, for him, he is just another guy. Pens fans can’t trade him fast enough and that also speaks volumes. Downgrade in net, plus a more expensive player of marginally better value. Where exactly is the long term fit for Vancouver?

What if the pens added a later pick? Say 3rd, 4th, or 5th?

No I don't think that moves the needle. Hoglander is a young, cost controlled top-9 energy winger that can play with anyone. Only thing that moves the needle is something like Marino, which I'm guessing you don't want to do.

He's been traded because Rutherford was trying to tinker, he traded him to Toronto, then traded to get him back.

Rutherford deemed him expendable. Then Toronto deemed him expendable. Now he's fallen out of favour in Pittsburgh again.

I think he'd be a good target, but as a cheap pickup and nothing more.

So what you’re saying is that Boeser and Miller have no value because Canucks fans have made significant amounts of trades involving them? I’ve never understood the “well your fanbase keeps trading him so his value must suck” on a site that’s supposed to make realistic trades where there is value from both sides lol. And again DeSmith has a 3.03 GAA and .901 save percentage, Halak has a 2.9 GAA and .902 save percentage. There isn’t really a downgrade there 😂

This is a misconception. Being a poor fit for a certain system is not uncommon at all in the NHL and then going to a team where they succeed. Hitting mid 40's in points while being a poor fit should actually speak more to how good he is. He's miscast on the Pens. He was brought in to be a top-line winger to play with Malkin and he's just not that player. Kapanen is a high-end third line player who can handle 2nd line duty when needed, and that's less than the Pens needed him to be. It's really as simple as that.

Now, again, I won't argue whether the trade makes sense for VAN, maybe it doesn't, but if a trade were to happen it would be fair value.

Vancouver is a capped out 20th place team with essentially no prospects. For many fans, the ultimate path to a cup involves trading some of the older high end talent while their value is high to expedite a retool of the organization. Hardly the same situation. As for value, it’s not just calculated in goals and assist. For Vancouver, players on ELCs are infinitely more valuable than a player heading to RFA status looking to get paid. So while on paper the value might appear equitable, in Vancouver’s situation it really isn’t.
