My take on the TDL

Description
I'm sure there will be more depth pieces on expiring contracts being moved out for mid to late round picks but those aren't too interesting.

Also let's face it, this is a rebuild so I assume there will be a lot more moves coming in the offseason but this is just my take on the 3 other bigger names that will be on the move at the TDL and what I think is fair due to demand and would like to see in return.

Lastly I know there will be comments on the Bruins and the Habs not doing deals, but new management that have ties with Boston and both franchises are in very different places right now so I think they could benefit each other in this deal.

I’m not a MTL fan so I’m good with all of em, but these are little light for MTL return I would think and other MTL fans, ON here, are going to be not happy with these.

But I thank you for not believing your players are worth twice as much as they are, just cause they’re your players

Thank you for a realistic Petry to Dallas trade.

Far more reasonable than the majority of the stuff we’re seeing on this site out of montreal. The one thing i would say is i still don’t think there’s a snowballs chance in hell that boston and montreal make a trade.

Jay....one of the more reasonable proposals. Dallas would still have to have faith that Petry is a 5m Dman for three full years.

4.25 to be exact which is what they are currently paying Klinberg and MTL relieves some of the pressure by taking Khudobin and his 3.3 for the rest of this year and next.

If Petry gets out Canada, reunites with his family and proceeds to score 40+ pts again next year then Dallas make out like bandits. But you're right its definitely a risk/reward situation for the Stars.

You may be right, but this is supposed to be a business and I think its childish to not make a deal that benefits both franchises solely based on rivalry. I hope that is one of the things new management changes.
Plus I'd really just like to see Anderson and Debrusk on the same line together.

Well, the habs new management could change that, but the bruins aren’t about to change. There’s been like two or three minor trades (one of those minor trades turned into Ken Dryden) between the two teams. It’s not about to start.

Theres legit reasons not to make deals with direct competitors, both from a team management standpoint, and an overall business standpoint. From a competition standpoint, it just doesn’t really make sense to make a deal with a direct competitor. See: Ken Dryden. From a business standpoint, it just removes some of the options for an exec. Sweeney could make a trade with Arizona tomorrow, host a presser, and say, “I really think this is a win for both sides.” If Sweeney makes a trade with the habs and says that, he’s fired. If he moves Debrusk to the habs, he HAS to win that trade. If Debrusk regains form and starts popping 30, he has to explain that at every job interview he ever goes on.

Fair point, but the league has also changed and the divisions are much larger now. So are you saying the Bruins should not trade with Tampa, Toronto, Florida, Detroit, Buffalo and Ottawa? I get the stakes are higher within your division but atm MTL are bottom feeders heading into a rebuild and Boston is trying to take advantage of the last of their window so if Boston were to make a trade within their division then MTL makes the most sense, logically.

Sorry I guess I'm not questioning so much the business sense of not trading within your division as much as the why Boston and Montreal never deal specifically even though both teams have been known to trade within their division on occasion. Either way you did make a very solid argument. Well said.

Thanks, but I guess just to clarify -

So there’s the competitive side of things, and then the business side of things.
Competitive side - applies to all division opponents somewhat equally, dependent on the relative spots of the two teams (the bad Ottawa senators shouldn’t care about making a trade with the competitive florida panthers)
Business side - rivalries sell. A GM shouldn’t give a crap about fans, but owners sure do, and at the end of the day the GM reports to the owner. Jeremy Jacobs isn’t letting Don Sweeney trade with the habs.
