Canucks future cap issues chicago comparison

Created by: Dekes
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 16, 2022
Published: Feb. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
okay so we will start by subtracting the costs of the created players i made so 6 created needs at 775k = 4.65 mill+ 2.75 mill = 7.4 mill vancouver has 7.4 mill in cap space assuming poolman and dickinson are moved as they are on LTIR also add 1.9 mill for the scratches as we really don't know who van's future depth players will be so van has 9.3 mill in cap space

the needs Vancouver has, Van needs 2 top 4 RHD dmen at this current day with the dman market they will cost atleast 5+ mill so lets: 10 mill
Van needs a 3C most likely: 2.5 mill
Van needs a 4C most likely: 1 mill
Van needs a backup goalie: 1.75 mill
Van needs 3 scratches lets assume 900k each: 2.7 mill

in total that would cost 17.95 mill to achieve but van only has 9.3 mill in cap so that leaves them at -8.65 mill

For those who don't believe vancouver is in deep cap trouble here is your view of what is about to happen. Vancouver really has no choice but to move 1 of miller, horvat, garland or boeser

if vancouver keeps all 4 they will be sacrificing any chance of having good depth or a solid Dcore if they keep all of them they will be stuck in that average team stage where they don't suck but they will always be 1st rd exits. The cap issues don't stop there as the following season they have to resign Petey who will get 8+ Podklozin if developed right probably 3+ and klimovich will most likely get a bridge deal around 1.5-2 mill.

Canucks only big contract over 3 mill in the next 3 years that doesn't need to be resigned is myers and he most likely will be a canuck till his final yr of contract or when he becomes a UFA as his contract is immovable unless retention but Van can't afford to retain 30-50% of a contract that big.

Sorry to canucks fan but right now is 100% time to sell while players have value next season teams will know canucks are financially screwed and will take advantage of van having to low sell on players like Vegas almost had to due if it wasn't for "Stone randomly being put on LTIR".

I know ill get hated on but this is the truth van is financially effed and they still have many key wholes to fill so i think it would be smartest for them to sell while garland, boeser and millers value are at their highest gain cap space and gain picks and prospects cause if they don't they seriously risk the chance of those players either walking or get less value then what they are worth in a trade

And to those who still don't believe me and are doubtful about what im saying chicago blackhawks are a perfect example of a team having to sell short on solid players because they had bad cap issues and waited to long to move their players when their value was highest and ended up getting the short end of the stick
examples
Sept 11 2015
Chicago acquire 2017 5th rd pick+ dennis robertson+ jack massie
Carolina acquire Kris versteeg+jaokim nordstrom+ 2017 3rd
(Chicago loses good 3rd+ 4th liners plus pays 3rd for 2 AHL players + lower rd pick becuase of cap)
July 10th 2015
Chicago acquires Trevor Daley+ ryan garbutt
Dallas Acquires Patrick Sharp+ Stephen Johns
(Chicago moves a 50 point winger+ depth dman for an low to average 2nd pair dman and a depth forward)
June 30th 2015
Columbus acquires Brandon Saad+ 2 depth players( never of any significance)
Chicago acquires Marko Dano+ Artem anisimov+ 2016 4th+ 2 depth players ( never of any signicance)
(Columbus acquires a young 50 point scoring winger and in return chicago gets a 4th liner in dano a decent 3C in anisimov and 4th, again chicago couldn't afford to resign saad0

June 27th, 2015
Rangers Receive Annti raanta
Chicago receives ryan hagerty
( Rangers get young promising goalie, chicago gets AHL dman)

October 4th, 2014
Islanders acquire Nick Leddy
Chicago acquires 4 depth players the best being Anders nilson
(Chicago can't resign young very offensively gifted leddy and moves him for scraps for cap space)

June 15th 2016
Carolina acquires Teuvo tervainen+ bryan bickell
chicago acquires 2016 2nd+ 2017 3rd
(Chicago can't afford bickell contract or teuvo extension and sells low)
heres the big one that's gonna hurt
June 23rd 2017
Columbus acquires Artemi Panarin+ tyler motte+ 2017 6th
chicago acquires Brandon saad+anton forsberg+ 2018 5th
( chicago moves 70+ point young forward plus promising young 4th liner for 50 point saad who seems to have plateaued and young goalie who looks to be a career backup, chicago could not affored to resign panarin as he was to recieve a rather large contract and so had to sell short on him)

if these examples aren't enough idk what is
chicago sold
Panarin 70+ point young forward
Saad 50+ point young forward
Sharp 50+ Point veteran forward
Leddy 30+ point young offensively gifted dman
Teravainen 40+ point young forward
Raanta young very promising goalie
and the only significant assets chicago got in return for all those stars were
Brandon saad (traded then re-acquired)
2016 2nd
2017 3rd
trevor daley

that is what happens when you run into cap problems and the only moveable contracts you have are your star players, GM's will take advantage

so hopefully van's fan realize now you better hope your GM doesn't expect massive overpays for your players as teams will just wait till canucks have no choice but to move them and get them for way cheaper. the best the canucks can do is try to get fair value

atleast the blackhawks got a few cups to show so the bad trades won't hurt them so bad

Cap projected to increase $1m each season for the next few, so you’ll have a bit more wiggle room. Instead of signing everyone at league Min, you could go to 900k.

Saw somewhere that JT was planning to be in USA for his next contract. That could be a bump in the road if true

to all my fellow hockey fans you are welcome im tired of hearing canucks fans wanting E Lindros like value for miller, garland and boeser, and exposure was much needed

All that, but why can't Vancouver trade assests like Myers + Ekman Larsson. At least there is another 13m available

even then though moving myers doesn't free enough cap space for them to acquire all their needs sure they get a top 4 RHD but they still need another top 4RHD and a bottom pair RHD.

again myers contract isn't moveable till the last year really unless van retains but as i just showed van does not have the cap to retain on myers for multiple years.

as for OEL same deal only can be moved if Van retains( not really an option) or if they pay a large price to move his contract
OEL is making 7.26 mill for the next 5.5 seasons he will be 35-36 when his contract is done and idk many dmen that stayed worth that type of cash at that old of an age, especially because OEL has already regressed in his game the last 3ish seasons so i expect that trend to continue maybe not significantly but by 33ish i don't see him being much more then a 4-5th dman on a strong playoff team

I would question if the Canucks should spend 21m on Boesner, Miller and Horvat. That combination (and the Canucks) hasn't brought success so is it wise to keep them?
Trading them for cheaper assets and picks and using the picks just might be better value.
Besides, I can't see Miller resigning with Canucks, and maybe not Horvat either.

funny how out of the 20ish comments you are the only person who disagrees with what i posted maybe you should learn how hockey works. i gave a solid explanation, solid examples and even showed what the futures looks like in terms of cap buy showing projected contracts. But okay just hate because you are salty. I may not know the canucks but i know 2011 still hurts your feelings hahah

thank you. i don't know a whole lot about vacnouvers depth and stuff i tried to do some research to understand their young guys potentials and how they play i was more just trying to shiw Vans cap out look for the future. When reading the only prospect that seemed to be a sure fire solid prospect was klimovich but who knows anything could happen like Woo could turn into that top 4 RHD you need and mcdonough could end up being your future 2/3 C but again i Can't predict the future for how players will develop i just can show want Van's cap situation is looking like most likely
