Laine

Created by: HeadHighSauce
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2022
Published: Feb. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
EF mentioned he *may* be available and while I think it's unlikely, wanted to give it a try to gauge value. That 23 2nd can be a 23 first if we win a playoff round

Is this enough for him if he is?

8 game point streak, 10 goals 16 points in that span. 45 goal pace. Imagine that next to Hughes.

I would call that an overpay. That's an Eichel price tag and even though he's been good so far this season, I don't think the sample size is large enough just yet.

Massive haul for the one-dimensional Laine. Columbus would be idiots not to accept, and New Jersey would be idiots to offer this.

Two very good young defensive pieces, a good middle-six forward, a top-5 pick and a top-37 pick.
For a guy who will net +3 goals a season
(and wants to break the bank in free agency)

I would trade White and 7th or 8th overall for him. Columbus takes a slightly overpaid 3rd liner and get a valuable 3 years of ELC. And Sens clear 5 mill to re-sign Laine

Interesting perspective from everyone. I would think Devils fans would be higher on a ppg winger on pace for 45 goals/82.

Regarding sample size, it’s only small if you ignore his first 3 years

Be my guest.
Blue Jackets fans were asking Jack Hughes+ in a trade.
And if Laine still wants to be highest paid winger...would cost $12 million+ a year.
I'll pass.

I would love a guy who can give us 45 goals.
But not one that will also cost us 35 goals, eat up 1/8th of our cap and become locker room problem.
Not to mention the lost value in prospects and picks.

I mean the dude is like 90th percentile in WAR this year. And if he’s playing with Bratt and Hughes, idk man.

Maybe you’re higher on Zacha and Shakir than I am

According to Evolving Hockey, he is ranked #256 in WAR this year (0.6)
I think we are much better off trading for Garland, Boeser, or similar

The only real valuable piece is the unprotected 1st, I'm not sure what Mukhamadullin's value is though, wonder what Laines next deal will look like, sure miss seeing him with the Jets... frown

Not a huge fan of Dom L. My experience with his model is that it overrates bad players on good teams and underrates good players on bad teams.

Only been a passer-by on TDH.

I certainly have my concerns with GSVA because I think it overrates production but it’s more predictive than most models so I try to at least give it some credence.

It boils down to Laine shooting the ****ing lights out and the devils needing that. I probably prefer other targets because they’re cheaper or more lowkey efficient but if Laine is available I think the Devils have to check in. If the devils stick him with Hughes and Mercer/Bratt, he’ll score 40 goals every year and it won’t matter that he doesn’t drive play

My general thinking on wingers. We have a good 8-9 guys that could conceivable score 20+ goals next season. Few seem like good bets for 40. If we improve our blueline on d-zone exits, stop a few more pucks (either via blocking or goaltending) and stay healthy, I think our offense will be fine. The goals will come.

Whether its a forward group that can last a 7-game series in playoffs, thats a different question.

I mean that’s pretty optimistic because in the last full season there were 112 players with 20+ goals which would be a little over 3 per team, though obviously that’s not factoring team strength into things.

If we have a “few” guys that are good bets for 40, well we should be presidents trophy favorites.

I’m general I agree and believe our skaters are good as it stands. We need a goalie.

Though, if we need big bodies for a playoff run (don’t really buy this), Laine is 6’5” wink

I was going to ask this question - if you have 4--6 wingers who were all good for at least 20+ goals/year, would that trump having 1-2 guys who are good for 30-40+ each year w/an occasional 40-50+ year?

The attractive part of Laine is he can put up 50, especially playing next to Jack.
