This man is analytically one of the worst defenseman in the league and Montreal wants a 1st and a good prospect for him? His peanlties taken vs drawn is -44, worst in the league as well. I would rather have keep Mikkola as Parayko's partner

If your deal doesn't work, I'm sure Montreal will sell you back your 4th rounder for a 1st and prospect.

I cannot speak for anybody but myself, but I will tell you why Chiarot will probably fetch a 1st. He isn't worth that, but this year UFA's on expiring contracts that can handle playoff minutes and hitting with a decent cap hit are not in abundance. Add to that six teams that have said they are going for it this year and teams will get into a bidding war which will greatly push up his stock, which will benefit Montreal.

And who exactly thinks he's amazing? He's a serviceable #4 D. Where did Savard play for the Lightning last year?

What you should be questioning is why you and others on here think they know the value of players better than actual NHL media members and insiders.

Agreed. Chiarot isn't worth a 1st but the Habs will get one for him.

he is no where comparable to savard. Chiarot has been so bad this year i wouldn't give a third for him. the only comparable is they're both defensemen

No idea, he sucks
Would rather play literally any defenseman in Panthers' system over him

Unless you have watched a majority of games he’s played in Montreal you have no idea how good he is.. stats and analytics don’t tell the whole story of a player

His numbers from the playoffs aren't even good, he can just get away with more illegal stuff when they swallow the whistles. Habs were outscored 21-13 with him on the ice 5v5 in the playoffs.

You need the stats/analytics and the tape to tell the whole story. When you watch games, there are plenty of guys that look like they're doing a whole lot and in the grand scheme not much of it matters. For example, if Chiarot can't keep his gap on an entry, it doesn't matter how well he clears the crease. It's like falling into holes and then bragging about how good you are at climbing out of holes. So much defensive value lies in what doesn't happen, it can make it difficult to really assess performance without seeing the long-term results in the measurable stats.

While I agree with you, even the eye test doesn't pass here. His lateral step is lacking, he often loses focus in front of the net. He doesn't make a strong outlet pass. He really isn't that great. He's a glorified Bortuzzo.

There are two types of GMs:

1. Him big strong. Hit people. Me GM. Me like big strong.

2. GM "That big strong guy really pushed my analytically sound players around. I should get someone like that for my team."

Look how New York reacted to the Wilson incident. Especially with the joke that is DOPS during playoffs.
Like it or not, GMs and teammates value having certain player types on their team.

Analytics have nothing to do with how a defensive player plays the gap on an opposing player or how efficient they are at wearing down opposing players in the corner or in front of the net which is worth something to actual nhl coaches and GMs come playoff time .. I’m not saying he’s worth a first and a prospect but he’s definitely worrh a first to a contending team or a 2nd and a B prospect

All that doesn’t matter once playoffs start Nhl coaches and GMs know that chiarot is going to be a hard to play against .. I mean if he’s so crappy why are so many teams interested in him?

Ok but my point is, if they don't play a good gap consistently, it isn't measured as a stat but it will show up in the form of goals against, expected goals against, penalty differential, etc. Not many guys can get away with poor play from the eye test and good analytics, the results add up over time. FWIW a 2nd round pick at the deadline would be pretty reasonable given the decisions we see NHL GMs make all the time. I hate all the 1st + chatter but it isn't going anywhere when you've got media guys pumping the tires.

So do analytics account for a goalie giving up a soft goal or your D partner turning the puck over for a high scoring chance or a fwd not playing a breakout pass properly .. so many different things aren’t accounted for when it comes to analytics this is why nhl teams still and always will use professional scouts ..
like I said though I do agree that he’s not worth a 1st and a prospect

Well we don't know how many teams are actually interested in him versus speculation. Unfortunately the two get interchanged quite often. In his case, I can see if someone maybe wants him as a 3rd pair guy, but the Blues need a 2nd pair guy and he's not good enough on a championship team.

He probably won't because it's a buyers market loaded with LDs.

He's trash, anyone saying otherwise is clueless. I'd been watching most of the Canadians games this season and his individual suck has been a constant. Out of position too often, too slow to recover when he gets caught so he defaults to taking penalties, gets walked way too often, not good at getting the puck out or making a good first pass, cant seem to follow/recognize the play in his own end, no real offensive upside. He'd be a liability on any contending teams 3rd pairing. I will actually be in tears if that's St.louis's answer to their defensive struggles.

There's a bunch out there that could be had. Lindholm, Chych, Soucy, Giordano, Leddy, Chara, maybe De Haan, Kulak, maybe Graves, maybe Staal, maybe Dillon, perhaps even a few more.

Time will tell what? I did not say all of them would move, I said there are tons of options for LDs out there. Time is telling that right now.
