The dreaded three-way deal

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2022
Published: Feb. 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Three-way trades always seem more off that two-way trades. I am rarely a big fan.

But I had an idea and wanted to craft one to see what it would look like.

---------------

VAN gets ---
Pavel Zacha
Case McCarthy
Graeme Clarke
2022 1st round pick (TOR - #27)

VAN gives ---
Brock Boeser
Jaroslav Halák
2022 4th round pick (VAN - #109)

NJD gets ---
Brock Boeser
Timothy Liljegren
Rodion Amirov
Peter Mrazek
2022 4th round pick (VAN - #109)

NJD gives ---
Damon Severson
Jonathan Bernier
Pavel Zacha
Case McCarthy
Graeme Clark
$2.458m for 2021-22
$2.083m for 2022-23
2022 3rd round pick (NJD - #68)

TOR gets ---
Damon Severson (at 50%)
Jaroslav Halák (at 25% pre-bonus)
Jonathan Bernier (to LTIR)
2022 3rd round pick (NJD - #68)

TOR gives ---
Peter Mrazek
Timothy Liljegren
Rodion Amirov
2022 1st round pick (TOR - #27)

---------------

This assumes no extensions are agreed to before trade. And other than Bernier, everyone else is healthy at time.

My goals were:

(1) Use cap space as an asset from New Jersey
(2) Get NHL players back for NJ (GM's stated goal)
(3) Get a 1st to VAN in the Zacha/Boeser trade
(4) Get a physical RD prospect to Vancouver
(5) Get top RD to Leafs to pair with Muzzin
(6) Remain cap-neutral on the Leafs

[Also, one of my questions...if Halak is retained, its just the salary, correct? not the bonus]

---------------

I am sure others can come up with better iterations of this deal and would encourage them to do so.

Anything good here? What changes would you make?

      Big brain post.
      I'm a fan of it.
Values seem fair to me, but Toronto's benefit could be substantially improved by also sending Ritchie's cap to NJD.

Trading Bernier to the Leafs doesn't help the Leafs at all....it might be terrible for them if he comes back from LTIR.
Leafs need a goalie next, next year Mrzarek has to stay till at least the summer till the Campbell UFA is resolved (I think Campbell signs elsewhere)
Yes, Severson is an improvement this year and next year over Liljegren. But Liljegren is long term cap efficient and he is NHL capable Dman. Then adding Amirov and 1st just makes it impractical overpay for the Leafs.
I know it only two games, those back to back NJ/Toronto games just before the all star break. Severson was very bad on some Leafs goals. That's impressed on Dubas and Leafs fans.

Much much better than most of the three-team trades you see on this site

Can you trade LTIR relief mid-season or do you have to be accruing it all year?

      My guess is the later

Campbell isn’t going anywhere for 1. Secondly Liljegrens deal is up after this year but he is still an RFA.

I don't think this is all that bad really. Value could be tweaked a lil but considering all the moving pieces it's pretty well though out IMO. Nice post!

The number of Severson offers on ACGM appears to have increased since the played the Devils.
So hard to imagine interest has weakened.

This would be going forward. Essentially squeezing Severson & Halak into Mrazek's cap hit.

Well it's mostly from NJ fans or Leafs fans, where 90% of the Severson trades are having him going to the Leafs. Truthfully I really don't see the fit for him as Leaf, for what it might cost to get him. Leafs have four NHLers now who can play the right side.

Campbell isn't going anywhere? Well you think a signed deal would have been in place if that was the case. Wishful thinking isn't reality.

This is just fantasy land though. They are all worth more than Boeser at this point, especially without a contract.

All of the rumors to date fall in line with most people expectations (including many VAN fans) that it would be Zacha, prospect, non-1st pick. I had posted a summary of many recent Boeser to NJD trades that were sent by VAN fans. It’s a wide range, but that is the type of menu VAN would be choosing from.

So the question becomes what sort of prospect fills a need for Vancouver. Some have said physical RD, some have said right-shot Center, some have said straight picks.

I added Case McCarthy, a physical two-way RD who has experience playing with some offensive LD (Fensore, Farrance, York) and had success. I also added Graeme Clarke whose skillset is probably somewhat similar to Boesers stylistically. Could be a Boeser-lite someday if he stays healthy. Other options I considered: Fabian Zetterlund, Nate Schnarr, Reilly Walsh (although we’d prefer to keep him), Nikita Okhotiuk. All of these names would be top-5 guys in Vancouver’s prospect pool (some top-3 and Walsh would be #1).

Cap is a big thing there.

Also, I don’t know why they just don’t pull a Vegas/Tampa and put a big contract on LTIR until game 1 of playoffs.
