Description
The Ottawa Senators are in for an important offseason that will shape the future of their franchise… Pretty dramatic right? The Sens have proved over the last month that despite losing their top scorer, goal scorer, Top defence man and Goaltender they can compete and win games. Their play over the last month has allowed many of their young talented players like Brannstrom and Formenton to showcase their abilities.
The point of this post is to point out the obvious. The Sens still need a top6 RW, and they need a Top4 Dman. Both of these positions I believe are crucial for the Sens to take the next step.
For the Top 6 RW, I’ve seen some interesting trade scenarios (Boeser,Garland,Schmaltz,Fiala, Etc) as well as FA signings (Giroux, Kuzmenko). As for internally it can only immediately be filled by Colin White. He’s making top6 money with top9 numbers. Unfortunately with his injury he was unable to showcase his talent or synergy with Norris/Stutzle. If a trade for a Top6 FWD doesn’t happen at the deadline(Very likely won’t) I think what the Senators choose to do this offseason may rely on how well white plays when he returns from injury. If he returns and plays well he could be a piece in a trade package or held onto. If he had a bad return he could be bought out or held on to till next years deadline/draft to build his stock. As a Colin white fan watching his interviews or interviews with the players talking about white it’s clear he is a leader in the locker room so I hope they can find a way to keep him. However, as a Sens fan I’m excited to see the route they take this offseason (even if it means trading Whitey) and I’m hopeful they start next season headed the right direction.

TLDR: I make a bold claim Colin White is the most important player at this stage of the senators rebuild and he hasn’t even played this year.

I agree about those needs, but if we are patient on Defence we will be fine.

We def need a top 6F . We will pick top 10 so we can be Patient and get our guy there . Or we can make a trade. Or we can do both

I really want White to succeed here. He's such a lovable guy, and he's really an important guy to this group.

Unfortunately, I just don't see where his path forward would be. I can't see him as a top 9 C, i don't see him being good enough offensively to justify not making a big RW addition this summer, and I don't see them keeping him at that price to play on the 4th line.

The only spot I see being open for him to stay would be the 3rd line RW spot, and that would require one of Paul or Brown not to return next year, which seems unlikely. If Paul ends up leaving, it would totally make sense to keep White if he plays well this season and go Brown-Pinto-White on the 3rd line. Maybe there's a world where White plays so well in the last 20 something games this season that makes the Sens feel they would be okay to trade Connor Brown to help bring in that big RW they need, but it seems extremely unlikely.

I agree on defence with Sanderson coming in and Brannstrom stepping up they have a decent framework there with the rookies in place to step in not too far down the road.
I’d be open to them trading the pick too if it lands outside of the Top7, especially now that Slafkovsky had go and have a great Olympic showing and boost his draft stock.

I agree while making this I could really see how he’s unfortunately been squeezed out. He doesn’t have the offensive skill to be in the Top6 but the 3rd line is already set. Between him and Paul I would likely choose Paul as his contract would be way less and his defensive game in my opinion is superior. Obviously if they don’t sign Paul I’d be happy for them to hang on to white, but It’s not fair to the player or the team to put him on the 4th line and tank his Value. Hopefully he can get a good bunch of games in down the stretch.

Slafkovsky moving into the top 5, just gifts us one of Lambert or Kemell
