Lightning Retool

Created by: NeedTheCleanser
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2022
Published: Feb. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
LETS just say the Lightning complete the 3 peat and decide to retool for cap purposes a year in advance of Cirelli and Cernak needing new deals…. I could see this happening.

The Sabres have the cap space to get both locked up long term. Joki and Mittelstadt have more years under cost control on their bridge deals.

Wouldn’t the idea of a retool be to get younger and not older. Getting rid of 2 guys in their mid 20s doesn’t make much sense to me. Would make more sense to get rid of older vets before this in a retool.

Honestly, Lightning are giggling because they'll find a way to make all the players elite

His point was they need new deals that won't be affordable. I agree with you, but they won't move the core guys like Stamkos or Hedman, so I see what he's up to

I meant guys like Palat, Killorn and maybe McDonagh, but I get what he was trying to do.

I believe McDonagh has a NMC, Palat and Killorn are highly important guys in the playoffs. They're basically moving the younger guys in contract years for other young guys making less, but all still have solid potential

Cernak and Cirelli are both key cogs in the lineup and playoffs. I’d say are both more important than Killorn and Palat.

No it's an NTC for McDonagh ,but yeah maybe one and Sergachev is gone before either Cirelli or Cernak

I doubt it's Sergachev, he's young and I believe has a few more years. Cirelli and Cernak kinda makes sense here

Cernak is 13 months older and by far their best RHS DEFENSEMAN and Cirelli is 11months older both will probably get less than Sergachev

My point is Sergachev is the future of the blue line, he isn't the one going at all. Also knowing tampa, Jokiharju would become something lol

Cernak is more valuable than Sergachev to TB their depth at LD is far superior to RD and Cernak is a top pair shutdown defender who'll probably sign cheaper Sergachev has a 7.2 QO
Cernak has a 4.5. Can TB really afford 3 LD making over 6.75 per just saying.

I dont think Tampa would do this. But I don't think buffalo should do this.

These guys will be exiting their primes before buffalo is a legit contender.

Tampa easily declines. Both Cirelli and Cernak are vital to the team's future, much more so than either Killorn or Palat. Cernak is the future on the right side ofv thh defense, and Point-Cirelli will be the 1&2C for many years to come. If one of the 3 rfas has to be moved, it's definitely Serg. He will return the most and he may ask for more than Tampa should offer. Both he and Cirelli QO are 5.76, while Cernak's is 3.57. Of course they won't sign at those numbers, but more than ljkely Cirelli between 6-6.5 and Cernak around 4 and change. If Sergachev is willing to sign in the 6 range as well, great, but if he starts asking g for 7 or 8+, cya. Tampa won't move these 2 very valuable young pieces in the middle of their window for downgrades at key positions and picks that might help the team 3 years down the line.

100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.
CBA Reference 10.2 (a) (ii)
Sergachev QO 7.2
Cirelli QO 7.2
Cernak QO 4.45

Not if the contract was signed after 7/10/20, then it becomes 120% of the annual aav of the contract. So,
Serg-5.76
Cirelli-5.76
Cernak-3.57

WHY would Tampa “retool” though?
ESPECIALLY if they win the Cup AGAIN with this core group
LOGIC would say they’d wanna keep it together & go for more

They’ll do what they always do & shed the necessary Cap they have to
Sabres fans look to steal guys from Tampa EVERY off-season

It’s a nice thought….
But it just doesn’t EVER happen, now does it?

I’m a Sabres fan….
and i totally agree with you

There’s just no reasonable decision to be made where Tampa ships out 2 important, good young players

Idk how u guys get outta your Cap messes every damn year,
but u always figure out a way

Buffalo doesn't have the depth to make a trade like this. It would be very foolish for them to make thus.
Plus players playing secondary roles on enter teams do not often translate to bigger roles on worse teams
