John Klingberg (add retention as needed)

Dallas Stars
Dominik Bokk OR Ryan Suzuki
Noel Gunler
*Conditional 2022 1st

No. Any future 1st had to be conditional on performance. Gunler could go, but he'd be the ONLY prospect going. Klingberg is a PP specialist who can't play 5v5, he's a walking injury. He's literally TDA with injury issues. Would you trade Ottinger, a 1st + for TDA?

- Klingberg generates more 5v5 shots/60 than DeAngelo and assists more shots/60 than Bear, Slavin, Skjei, and Pesce
- He assists more scoring chances per/60 than every defenseman in the NHL aside from Roman Josi.
- He's one of the better defensemen in the league when it comes to 5v5 zone entries
- Klingberg generates more 5v5 zone exits (with possession) than anyone on the Canes aside from Slavin

Don't really agree that he can't play 5v5. Statistically that's not true. If that's how you value him then that's fine. You're more than entitled to your opinion, but I don't see there a deal there without a guaranteed 1st coming back to Dallas.

He might be the worst 5v5 D man in the entire NHL. It's statistically true. He's not better than TDA and that's what he'd be. There's no deal to be made if the ask is a guaranteed 1st.

I mean, statistically it's not even close to true...but I'm not going to try and change your mind on him.

So he’s putting up similar %rel stats to DeAngelo, Skjei, and Pesce. None of them have great relative stats. Difference between the 4 is that for the last 2 1/2 years, Klingberg has been playing for one of the worst head coaches in the league. Bowness cannot effectively coach a hockey team & has been hellbent on turning Klingberg away from his offensive skillset & into a defense-first kind of player.

I’m not saying that a team should trade for the player he was 3 seasons ago, but saying that he’s one of the worst players in the league at 5v5 (which statistically isn’t accurate) without any kind of context, & while ignoring his possession metrics, is egregiously shortsighted.

It's all a moot point, the Canes dont have their 2022 1st - was part of the KK offer sheet.

You're ignoring his defensive metrics! He's not good!

Yeah, I saw that after I posted this. If Dallas does trade Klingberg, I don't see a 2022 1st vs. a 2023 1st being a big sticking point for them. This year's draft is obviously sooner, but it looks like next year's draft should be better, so if I'm Nill I really don't care which of the next two 1st Round Picks a team wants to offer up.

Guaranteed 1st or you get nothing. Simple. If you don't put that in your ACGM then don't even bother posting.

You're not getting a certain 1st for Klingberg. He'll walk in free agency if that's the price. Dallas have no leverage with this because they openly won't pay him what he wants.
