Just a CBA thing you might not know - teams are only allowed 3 retentions per year, so you'd either eat one of those contracts at the deadline, or share the wealth with another team doing the retention for you.
The Marner deal is not happening like that, but I'd wonder if you'd have a better shot offering that package for Nylander? He's obviously a lesser player than Marner, but would still upgrade your first line wingers. You can also keep JVR's contract & avoid having to dump him and the pick with the $4M you'd save with that move. JVR's a UFA after 2022-23 and isn't a total black hole at this point, so it's not the end of the world to let him play out that deal.
The Chychurn deal feels like maybe an overpay? I can't get a feel for what Arizona wants to get for him, but I think a young roster player like Lindblom, a guy like Zamula who probably just slides into Chych's spot, and two firsts is almost like the Eichel package (I think you take JVR & the 2nd out of the equation because that's probably what a deal to dump his cap would look like). Alex Tuch is obviously better than Lindblom, but Peyton Krebs and Zamula are in the same ballpark as prospects, and then Vegas gave up a 1 & 2 instead of 2 1sts. I think Chych on a down year with a lesser track record than Eichel should return a lesser package.
