Let's be serious, Melnyk and company are not going to spend on another top 6 W. I think it is yet another underwhelming offseason.

that trade has me excited for next year ! actually I am a bit nauseous , as much as I don't like Zaitsev and Watson the return is just as bad and Ottawa has to throw in a 3rd to boot.

Norris and Formenton share the same agency as Tkachuk so it's more than likely they play hardball for more money and term. Wouldn't be surprised if Norris takes a bit longer than Formenton to get a deal done. I'm optimistic that Norris gets a 6-7 year deal at just under 7 per. Formenton might get a 2-3 year deal at just under 3 per (basically what you have here which is agreeable).

Ottawa won't spend assets to trade Zaitsev, methinks. Buying the contract out at the end of next year might be more feasible. JBD will be the one called up and down again next year. We'll see how Whitey does with the ~30 games we have this year barring injury again. If he makes an impact, he'll be kept around. If not, he gone. Buyout penalty is minimal with a cap credit.

If they are lucky with the lottery and land Juraj Slafkovsky, look for him to make the team out of camp. Kid reminds me too much of Hossa, it's ludicrous. It would be nice to add a top 6 forward via the draft. Kemell wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

Also, I don't see a realm where Greig doesn't make this team. He'd be a perfect fit on the 3rd line (If Paul isn't re-signed) and can play that 4th line grinder role as well. Him with Kastelic and Watson would be evil. Maybe even have him center Formenton and Brown... smile

So, Melnyk and Co. will not pay for another Top 6 W, but they will keep Colin White ($4.75m) and add Andrew Ladd and Nick Ritchie (combined $8m for a scratch and a fourth line winger)?

You post "realistic" and then include this trade idea

OTT
Ladd, Andrew
Ritchie, Nick
ARI
Zaitsev, Nikita
Watson, Austin
2022 3rd round pick (OTT)

Two dumps for Ottawa's grit AND a 3rd, yeah that's realistic, lol

A bit unfair to OP

Money OUT for 2022-23 : 6.0
Money IN for 2022-23 : 7.3

Money OUT for 2023-24 : 6.0
Money IN for 2022-23 : 0.0 (2 roster spots to fill)

This is to get rid of Zaitsev's last contract year.

Sorry, I don’t drink the kool-aid with all the Zaitsev hate. If you want to spout Zaitsev hate, it’s falling on deaf ears here.

Ok but I'm explaining what the OP is doing with this ACGM because your answer in post #4 didn't seem to consider the purpose of this proposal.

I don't personally hate Zaitsev. I thought he played well enough last season to be considered just slightly overpaid. But this season, completely different player (again). It has been a bit better recently so maybe he settles down but I don't know, maybe he still has personal problems that affects his performance.

This isnt really about Zaitsev not being an NHL player. This is about being realistic about the money that needs to be spent on Zub, Stutzle and Pinto in two years. They will have the cap space but lets be real, not the internal cap. This trade also allows the right side to be Zub, Braanstrom and JBD/Thomson which I think is also important for 2022-23. Watson is a good bottom line guy but, easily replaceable.

The money is there without needing to move Murray, White, or Zaitsev, the three most often bought out or moved players in these future scenarios.

Yes, Stützle, Pinto, and Zub will need contracts in 23/24. Lets put them at $18MM combined, $9MM, $5MM, and $4MM. I gave Pinto the Colin White contract, and Zub the standard top4D contract.

Stützle $9MM (projected)
Tkachuk $8.2MM
Norris $7MM (projected)
Brown $5MM (projected)
Pinto $5MM (projected)
Batherson $4.975MM
White $4.75MM
Formenton $2.5MM (projected)
Sokolov $1.5MM (projected)
Kastelic $1MM (projected)
Greig $894K
Kelly $762K
league minimum healthy scratch $775,000
league minimum healthy scratch $775,000

Forwards $52,137,381

Chabot $8MM
Zaitsev $4.5MM
Zub $4MM (projected)
Brannstrom $1.5MM (projected)
JBD $1.5MM (projected)
Sanderson $925,000
Thomson $863,333

Defence $21,288,333

Murray $6,250,000
Gustavsson $2MM (projected)

Goalies $8,250,000

==========

Forwards $52,137,381
Defence $21,288,333
Goalies $8,250,000
Dead Cap $1,833,333
Total $83,509,047

Expect the cap to go up in each of the next couple seasons.

The possible lineup

Tkachuk Norris Batherson
Formenton Stützle White
Greig Pinto Brown
Kelly Kastelic Sokolov

Chabot Thomson
Sanderson Zub
JBD Zaitsev

Murray
Gustavsson

==========

I'm not sure what Brannstrom or JBD will get on their next contracts, so they are more of a combined, then divided between them. Some think Stützle wont cost $9MM, but I went high just in case.

So without doing anything, this current team is within 10K of the 23/24 cap, with Zaitsev, White, and Murray remaining.

Moving forward, 24/25, Murray walks and Gus takes over as #1, and Zaitsev walks, as well as the $1,833,333 in dead cap coming off the books, and there's $12,583,333 to add to the expiring contracts of Sanderson, Greig, and Thomson for a grand total of $15,200,666 to resign Sanderson, Greig, and Thomson for 24/25.

24/25 is when Dorion will need to start doing the cap dance, but the money is there until then.

The team likes Zaitsev, and they play him a lot of minutes. Until he's not on the team, he's on this team, like it or not.

Sorry for this being so long, but this is what goes through my mind when I'm evaluating the team. I like to see the whole picture.

BTW, if Dorion trades for an expensive winger, one of those three big contracts will go the other way.

Damn if we continue having an "internal cap" during the (supposed) FYOUS, we'll be in all kind of trouble and I doubt we'll ever contend seriously. If we are ready to spend to the cap I think it will be very manageable

Batherson, Norris, Stutzle, Tkachuk, Pinto, Greig, Formenton, Brown, Paul
Chabot, Sanderson, Zub, JBD or Thomson, Kleven
Sogaard, Gustavsson

All the rest need to be cheap. If some emerge as better than expected (like a Sokolov/Jarventie), a trade will have to be made

Of course don't go too long term on Paul, Zub and Brown, something like 4-5 years max for each
