Appleton is a 4th liner - why are you sending Barrie across for him? That makes no sense... I know you want the cap money but (a) you didn't replace him, (b) you didn't use the cap space and (c) you lost the trade badly - think Hall for Larsson bad.

he is a player on the wrong side of 30, who is already on the decline

That doesn't excuse trading him for 10 cents on the dollar.

Our rookies are ready for a shot on LD (Broberg, Nemo, Lags) so Matta and Chiarot are terrible acquisitions, (one maybe but not both) spend that money on a Manson or De Haan for the upgrade on RD since Koekkoek isnt even a good AHL player now. Kane will fetch at least 5Mil+ on a one year in the open market as his previous contract was 7.5Mil so retaining his services are likely not going to be possible.

I agree if you are moving him take non roster assets or Soucy +. Appleton doesnt fit next year IMO Since Holloway will be a Regular NHLer

Usually I agree with ur takes on these types of oiler related posts man but I gotta disagree with this one

Barrie is bad and doesn't do anything for edmonton

He is already on the decline signed to 4.5 for another 3 years on the wrong side of 30.

He is terrible defensively and offensively doesn't fill any need (Nurse and Bouchard are offensively minded enough with even samurkov coming up soon)

With this trade, you are able to shed cap long term (which will help with the multiple rfas we have to sign in the coming years) and open up room in the bottom 4 to developing prospects

Appleton is a great player for the playoffs as well as he brings grit and sneaky goal scoring

Two other things besides that one trade though
-If Edmonton signs Chiarot to that I will cry he is Barrie but worse
-If the Kane project keeps being even a mild success and he stays out of trouble some team will throw 4-6 million at the guy short term he's a top-line winger to have

Keith isn't going to retire, why would he? He has 1 year left for 6 million, doesn't make any sense.

See, Barrie might have less value to Edmonton due to Bouchard's offensive skill, but that doesn't mean lots of teams don't want his offense. And I'm not buying that he's in serious decline, not when other teams are still expecting top dollar for their 30-something defensemen (Petry, for example). Barrie is only just 30 and hasn't had any major injuries recently, there's no justification for that narrative IMO. John Klingberg is just a year younger, scoring at a similar pace this year and is worse defensively, yet he's tabbed to get a 1st+ at the deadline and then a MUCH larger contract in the summer. This Barrie hate is unreasonable and completely unsupported by the facts.

Here's a short comp between Klingberg and Barrie:

GF%
B: 48.39 (+2.72)
K: 42.42 (-8.11)

xGF%
B: 49.54 (-3.63)
K: 47.86 (-4.46)

SCF%
B: 50.38 (-0.80)
K: 50.55 (-1.18)

HDCF%
B: 50.78 (+0.69)
K: 49.53 (-5.90)

Their zone starts are nearly identical.

Soucy doesn't move the needle either - he's the 6th / 7th defenseman on a non-playoff team. There's no reason Barrie should be valued any less than Klingberg.

Personally I can agree that edmonton can get more for barrie and that there are gonna be a ton of overpayments for crappy d-men this year (Klingberg,Petry,Chiarot, and hopefully Barrie) so yeah ur right in the sense that barrie could get a 2nd+ -A Prospect on the open market but from a standpoint of is he good or not... No he is not good he isn't a top 6 d-man on our team imo but everyone is entitled to their own and he could turn his career around outta nowhere and make me look like an idiot

Im not saying straight across, Im saying Soucy PLUS. I think he adds some more depth, can play a nice shutdown hard to play against game and can be deployed on either side. He is also from the area and local products have a soft spot in my heart. Soucy and a 3rdish range would be great value.

What does Soucy bring that Nemo doesn't?

Not a serious up grade to Nemo i get that. I do think you are prone to set yourself up for failure deploying to many young/rookie defenseman. Soucy is somebody that could play RD and there is no issues with having to many good young defense, I think Soucy adds a bit more stability. His cap is super friendly as well compared to the two above....

What are you trying to say here - that he looks good compared to a raw rookie?? Oooo, sign me up!! Honestly the gap isn't large and Nemo will be better for the experience, meaning the gap will only shrink going forward. I'm still not seeing anything close to a justification for this idea.

Its an immediate upgrade without being a full stop gap. Nemo still can get games in while adding experienced depth.... im not sure how you arent on the same page as me. Like i said i understand that it isnt a homerun swing but this is still valuable return that will help us win games now and keep building and growing a piece that will help in the future.

I'm not on the same page because you're suggesting trading Barrie for Soucy, that's why. He's a good 3rd pairing defenseman but it's bad from an asset management POV. And $2.75M is a lot for a 3rd pairing guy when the Oilers have 3 cheap young players who can step into that position next fall, one of whom is already there. As a target, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the Oilers IMO.

I specifically said NOT one for one. The destination makes sense Non roster assets make sense if Seattle wants to move a contract that is the only one i have time for. maybe Eberle?
