Deadline Blockbuster

Created by: Gren
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2022
Published: Feb. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tried to make a somewhat big trade here, I know Edmonton is in need of a goalie and we could give them Greiss with a retention while taking Smith off their hands.

And I can see Edmonton going after Hronek as Holland drafted him and they need a RHD (At least I think they do, correct me if I'm wrong.)

Tell me what you think about the values on the trades, thanks!

Ah, thanks for the heads up.

But would the value be fair after that?

What would you suggest as the return, I doubt Edmonton would want to give up a 1st.

Why would Yzerman move Hronek for garbage and picks?

Then there's no deal to be had. There's no incentive for Detroit to trade Hronek unless there is a VERY good return. I wouldn't even trade him for Edmonton's 1st round pick if they keep winning. It would need to be top 15 to even consider a trade. Then, when you factor in taking on the corpse of Mike Smith as a cap dump, that's an additional 2nd round pick. Then Greiss, with retention, is a 3rd. Lagesson has zero value and has already passed through waivers.

Fair, could you see any prospects that we'd maybe be interested in?

I seriously doubt Ken Holland has any interest in Filip Hronek. The Oilers have Barrie, Ceci, and Bouchard on RD and Hronek isn't going to provide any improvement to that cast. For Edmonton, the issue is that Barrie is an offense-first PP QB guy, Ceci is a 4-5 two-way defender, and Bouchard is a potential top 2 who can cover both special teams but is lacking in experience. They need to up the physicality in order for the team to become harder to play against. IMO, the ideal trade for the Oilers is one that moves Barrie and brings in a physical, shut-down RD capable of playing on the penalty kill and covering top-4 minutes if necessary.

Moving Greiss for Smith is also suspect. Greiss is, at best, a 1B at the NHL level. In Edmonton, that's a role that is already occupied by Mikko Koskinen. If Holland expects his team to make it into the playoff and perhaps get past the first round, he'd have to hope that Greiss hits a hot streak and maintains it for 25-30 games. I suppose its possible Greiss could do that, but his career to date suggests its highly unlikely he will. Mike Smith, on the other hand, has a history of those kinds of streaks. Having stated that, I'd be comfortable with a deal that exchanges Greiss for Smith because I doubt Smith is going to have the kind of run that overcomes Edmonton's deficiencies down the stretch and into the playoffs. I think there is advantages for Edmonton if they were to move Smith's contract for Greiss's, especially with salary retention. It clears the books for this summer and allows Holland to pursue a different veteran option to play in tandem with Stuart Skinner next season.

In this CapFriendly dream world I could suggest that moving Smith for Greiss (50% cap retention) allows for Holland to overpay Lou Lamoriello to swap Mikko Koskinen for Semyon Varlaomov, giving the Oilers a goaltending tandem with proven playoff success, and the freedom to let Greiss walk this summer so that Skinner can study under Varlamov next season. In the real world though, that probably isn't of interest to Red Wings AcGMs, and there are many reasons why Edmonton is unlikely to land both Varlamov and Greiss, including NMCs for Varlamov and Koskinen.

I honestly can't see any deal between Edmonton and Detroit that makes sense. I can't see what either team is selling or buying aligning, short of a minor deal, or salary cap retention, 3rd party situation.

Hronek easily a upgrade on both Ceci and Barrie. I'm not even sure Barrie knows where the defensive zone is...Also he is much cheaper and younger than Barrie. He'd fit quite nicely on your second pair.

You are entitled to your opinion, even if it is misguided.

The Oilers already have two offensive RD and need to shed one in order to make room for a bone crunching shut-down RD capable of playing PK and up to 20 minutes a game. Hronek is lacking in physical stature and defensive acumen. Edmonton would be better off shopping the kind of draft capital you are asking in search for players who will actually address their roster needs.

If Edmonton can pull off the right kind of trade, then maybe they get there. Certainly aren't going to manage that with what you've offered.

Pay attention:

The conversation is in response to the AcGM suggestion of Smith, Lagesson, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd for Greiss and Hronek.

For context, that deal does nothing to improve the Oilers and really doesn't make a lot of sense for the Red Wings.
